Kyomachi Onsen
In a basin in Ebino City that looks toward the Kirishima mountain range, Kyomachi Onsen sends its steam rising into the air. According to local lore the spring burst forth during drilling amid a lightning strike in the early twentieth century, and it was once even called the Thunder Spring. Old inns and public bathhouses still stand shoulder to shoulder here, preserving the nostalgic mood of a working spa town.
Highlights
The mildly alkaline simple spring has a soft, skin friendly feel and has long been cherished locally as a beauty bath. Walking the streets you pass old shops and wooden inns, and the retro townscape itself becomes a sight to enjoy. Each inn has a bath with its own character, and some are known for cave style baths.
Enjoying the Seasons
In spring a light haze settles over the Ebino basin and the surrounding fields turn a soft green. Summer invites cool evening strolls after a bath, while autumn offers distant views of the reddening Kirishima peaks. In winter, amid the deep chill typical of the basin, a soak lets warmth seep all the way to the core.
Access and Basic Information
The nearest station is Kyomachi Onsen Station on the JR Kitto Line, its very name pointing to the spa town. By car it is only a few minutes from the Ebino interchange on the Kyushu Expressway via National Route 268. Many inns welcome day visitors, so casual bath hopping is easy.
A Quick Tip
If you want to hop between baths, note that water temperature and bath atmosphere differ from inn to inn, so trying two or three lets you appreciate the depth of the town. On cold winter days, do not forget an extra layer for after you emerge.
