Ebino Kogen Spring Scenery — A Volcanic Plateau Painted in Miyama Kirishima Azaleas

In mid-May, something extraordinary happens on the Ebino Kogen plateau in the Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park: the hillsides and crater rims surrounding this highland wetland ignite in a blaze of pink and crimson, as the miyama kirishima azalea — a rare dwarf species endemic to Kyushu's volcanic highlands — reaches peak bloom. It is one of the most spectacular wildflower displays in Japan. Standing at roughly 1,200 meters above sea level, Ebino Kogen is one of Kyushu's premier scenic destinations, where from late May to early June vast colonies of miyama kirishima (deep-mountain Kirishima azalea) burst into flower all at once and wash the entire plateau in pale pink. The contrast between the majestic landforms carved out by volcanic activity and these delicate blossoms is overwhelming. The sweeping panorama fully earns the plateau its nickname, "the roof of Kyushu," and it is loved by hikers and sightseers alike.

Highlights

Ebino Kogen sits at approximately 1,200 meters elevation, formed by volcanic activity that also created a series of crater lakes — Fudo-ike, Byakushi-ike, Rokkannon-ike, and Onami-ike — each with different mineral colorations ranging from deep blue to vibrant green. The plateau's lake-circuit hiking trail (about 5.5 kilometers, roughly 2 hours) links these lakes and passes through azalea-covered ridges. In May, the azaleas create a carpet of color across the volcanic terrain that is simply unlike anything else in Japan. The surrounding Kirishima Mountain range, including Mt. Karakuni (1,700 meters), offers more challenging ascents with sweeping panoramas. Wild deer graze unconcerned among the azalea-covered slopes.

Peak Bloom of the Miyama Kirishima

The best viewing period runs from late May to early June. The pink carpet that blankets the flanks of Mt. Karakuni (1,700 meters) is breathtaking, and the sheer vitality of flowers blooming so boldly on rough volcanic rock moves everyone who sees it. Because the timing of the bloom shifts from year to year and with elevation, it is worth checking the current flowering status before you set out.

The Lake Circuit Trail

The recommended walk at Ebino Kogen is the "Ebino Kogen Lake Circuit Course," which loops past the crater lakes of Fudo-ike, Byakushi-ike, and Rokkannon-ike (the Ministry of the Environment describes it as about 5.5 km, taking roughly 2 hours). Note, however, that part of the route is closed due to volcanic activity: according to Ebino City's guidance (updated October 17, 2025), you can walk as far as Fudo-ike by way of Byakushi-ike, but you cannot continue beyond Fudo-ike and must turn back — the full loop is not possible. The combination of the cobalt-blue surfaces of the crater lakes with miyama kirishima blossoms and fresh green foliage makes for a scene that feels like paradise. The terrain is relatively gentle and easy to walk even for beginners.

Climbing Mt. Karakuni

If you are confident in your fitness, consider tackling Mt. Karakuni (1,700 meters). Be aware, though, that in the Kirishima range an eruption warning level of 2 (restrictions around the crater) remains in effect for Mt. Shinmoedake — announced by the Japan Meteorological Agency on October 17, 2025 (Reiwa 7), with caution required within roughly 2 km of the crater — and individual trails carry their own restrictions. Ebino City's guidance (updated October 17, 2025) states that the routes from the Prefectural Border Trailhead, the Onami-ike Trailhead, and the Karakunidake Trailhead can all be used, but descending toward the Iwoyama North Trailhead is not permitted, and the route from the Hinamoridake Trailhead via Ohata-ike and Shishidodake to Mt. Karakuni is closed. Always check the latest restrictions before entering the mountains.

Best Time to Visit

Miyama kirishima azaleas are at their best from late May to early June. Autumn foliage in October and November, and the rime-frosted trees of midwinter, each offer a completely different appeal. The plateau is green and lovely in summer, with cool hiking in July and August.

Access and Basic Information

According to Miyazaki Prefecture's official tourism site, the plateau is about 1 hour 25 minutes from Miyazaki Airport using the expressway, about 50 minutes from Kagoshima Airport, and about 55 minutes from the Takaharu IC on the Miyazaki Expressway. Parking holds 200 vehicles at 500 yen per day. Note that Prefectural Route 1 (the Kobayashi–Ebino Kogen–Makizono line) around Mt. Iwoyama remains closed, and is only provisionally opened on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 17:00 for vehicles with a roof (it may close without notice due to volcanic activity or weather). Start by gathering the latest information on bloom status and volcanic restrictions at the Ebino Eco-Museum Center before heading out on the trails; the center also provides maps. The eruption warning level around Ebino Kogen (Mt. Iwoyama) is 1 (be aware this is an active volcano), but the Japan Meteorological Agency calls for caution regarding volcanic gas inside the Iwoyama crater and within roughly 100 meters of the fumarole field 500 meters west of Mt. Iwoyama. On site, a radius of 250 meters around the Iwoyama crater and a radius of 100 meters around the western fumarole are off-limits. Never enter restricted zones, and do not linger near the crater or fumaroles. Weather on the plateau changes quickly, so do not forget warm clothing and rain gear. Morning visits maximize the chance of clear views before afternoon cloud. Buses from Miyazaki or Kagoshima also reach Ebino Kogen (about 1.5–2 hours), and the area can be reached by bus from Kobayashi as well; a car greatly improves flexibility.

• Best season and viewing period: Ebino City and Miyazaki Prefecture's official information notes that "from spring into summer, the plateau is colored by the natural-monument nokaido crabapple as well as vividly pink miyama kirishima azaleas." Flowering status can be checked with the Ebino Eco-Museum Center (0984-33-3002).
• Fees: Parking at Ebino Kogen holds 200 vehicles at 500 yen per day (a nature-conservation cooperation fee managed by the Natural Parks Foundation).
• Access: About 1 hour 25 minutes from Miyazaki Airport using the expressway, about 50 minutes from Kagoshima Airport, and about 55 minutes from the Takaharu IC on the Miyazaki Expressway. The roads linking Ebino City, Ebino Kogen, and Kirishima City, as well as Prefectural Route 30 (Ebino Kogen–Oda line), are passable.
• Parking: Ebino Eco-Museum Center parking lot, 200 spaces (500 yen per day).
• Winter closures and road restrictions: Prefectural Route 1 (the Kobayashi–Ebino Kogen–Makizono line) around Mt. Iwoyama — from near the Koshikidake trail entrance to the junction with Prefectural Route 30 — remains closed, with provisional opening only on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 17:00 and only for vehicles with a roof. It can close without notice due to volcanic activity or deteriorating weather. Chain regulations may be imposed in winter, so check Miyazaki Prefecture's road restriction information.
• Clothing and gear: Because this is a 1,200-meter plateau where the weather changes quickly, warm layers and rain gear are essential. Some sections of the walking trails are unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

*Volcanic activity and restrictions — essential reading: In the Kirishima range, eruption warning level 2 (restrictions around the crater) remains in effect for Mt. Shinmoedake, requiring caution against large volcanic blocks within roughly 2 km of the crater and against pyroclastic flows within roughly 1 km (Japan Meteorological Agency announcement of October 17, 2025 / Reiwa 7). The area around Ebino Kogen (Mt. Iwoyama) is at eruption warning level 1 (be aware this is an active volcano), but caution is advised regarding volcanic gases such as hydrogen sulfide inside the Iwoyama crater and within roughly 100 meters of the fumarole field 500 meters west of Mt. Iwoyama. On site, a radius of 250 meters around the Iwoyama crater and a radius of 100 meters around the western fumarole are off-limits. Do not enter restricted zones, and do not linger near the crater or fumaroles.*

*Trail restrictions: According to Ebino City's guidance (updated October 17, 2025), Mt. Karakuni can be climbed via the Prefectural Border Trailhead–Onami-ike–Mt. Karakuni route, the Onami-ike Trailhead–Onami-ike–Mt. Karakuni route, and the Karakunidake Trailhead route, but on none of them is it possible to descend toward the Iwoyama North Trailhead. The Hinamoridake Trailhead–Ohata-ike–Shishidodake–Mt. Karakuni route is closed. On the lake-circuit nature trail you can walk as far as Fudo-ike by way of Byakushi-ike, but beyond Fudo-ike you must turn back, so the full loop is not possible. Mt. Koshikidake is accessible only during the provisional opening of Prefectural Route 1 (Saturdays and Sundays). Always confirm the latest hiking information at the Ebino Eco-Museum Center before departure.*
