Located in Kami-Aoi, Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, Aoi Aso Shrine is an ancient shrine said to have been founded in 806, with over 1,200 years of history. In 2008, five of its structures were designated National Treasures, making it the first National Treasure architecture in Kumamoto Prefecture, and the first thatched-roof shrine building in the country to receive the designation. Affectionately called Aoi-san by locals, it serves as the guardian shrine of the Kuma region.

Spring brings fresh greenery around the lotus pond, summer offers blooming lotus flowers, and autumn showcases the harmony of foliage and National Treasure buildings. In winter, many visitors come for the first shrine visit of the year. The Okunchi grand festival, held from October 3 to 11, is a leading autumn festival of the Kuma region, and on the ninth a sacred procession winds through the streets of Hitoyoshi with great liveliness.Access and Basic Information

If you want to study the fine details of the National Treasures, allow around 40 minutes for your visit. Being within walking distance of Hitoyoshi Station, it is easy to stop by on a rail journey. Nearby you will find the public bathhouses of Hitoyoshi Onsen, Kuma shochu distilleries, and the boarding point for Kuma River boat rides, so you can spend half a day or a full day exploring the old castle town. During the Okunchi festival the city center gets crowded, so plan with extra time. The National Treasure halls photograph well in the softer morning light.A Word of Advice
