Shirakawa Yoshimi Shrine

Shirakawa Yoshimi Shrine in Minamiaso Village, Kumamoto Prefecture, is the guardian deity of the water source, adjoining Shirakawa Suigen, which was chosen among Japan's finest waters. About 60 tons of clear water per minute well up from the source, and it has long been revered as sacred water for longevity and warding off illness. The tree-shaded precincts and the transparent spring pond form a single quiet and sacred space.

Highlights

- The transparent pond of Shirakawa Suigen, where about 60 tons of spring water overflow each minute - The quiet hall of Shirakawa Yoshimi Shrine, dedicated to the water deity - The pure water scene where the spring flows out directly as the Shirakawa River - High-quality water chosen among Japan's finest waters in 1985 - A cool and sacred space surrounded by groves of trees

Enjoying the Seasons

In summer the coolness of the spring site is exceptional, making it popular as a place to escape the heat. In spring and autumn the harmony of the surrounding greenery or colored leaves with the water surface is beautiful, and the spring water stays roughly constant at about 14 degrees year round, flowing pure without freezing even in winter. In every season a steady stream of people come to draw water.
