Akiu Onsen

Akiu Onsen in Sendai's Taihaku Ward is a historic hot spring said to have healed Prince Shotoku's skin condition in the Asuka period. Beloved as Sendai's "inner retreat," it is an accessible resort about 1 hour from central Sendai.

Spring Quality

- Type: Sodium-chloride spring (salt spring) - Benefits: Neuralgia, muscle pain, fatigue recovery - Temperature: High-temperature source at 60–80°C

Highlights

- Akiu Otaki Waterfall: 55m-high waterfall — selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Waterfalls - Rairaikyo Gorge: Natori River gorge with continuous bizarre rock formations; promenade available - Akiu Fireflies (Summer): Late June to early July, Genji fireflies dance in the darkness

- Large resort hotels (Iwanumaya, Rantei, etc.) to small intimate ryokan - Many day-trip bathing facilities also available

Getting There

- From Sendai Station by Miyagi Kotsu Bus "Akiu Onsen" line: about 1 hour - From central Sendai by car: about 30–40 minutes (via National Route 286)

Tips

Weekdays are recommended as weekends are crowded. The Rairaikyo promenade is especially atmospheric at dusk.
