Matsushima โ One of Japan's Three Views, the Sea of Islands and Zuiganji Zen Temple
Matsushima โ One of Japan's Three Views and Zuiganji Temple
The bay of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture is one of Japan's most photographed and visited natural landscapes โ a bay of 260 pine-covered islands that has been celebrated as one of the country's "Three Views" (Nihon Sankei) for centuries. But Matsushima is more than scenic grandeur: the area contains Zuiganji Temple, one of Tohoku's finest architectural and artistic treasures, and a coastline rich in cultural heritage that rewards extended exploration beyond the famous view.
Highlights
Zuiganji's approach is itself remarkable โ the long cedar avenue passes cliff faces honeycombed with cave cells (zenjo-kutsu) carved by Heian and Kamakura-period monks for meditation. These small caves, each with Buddhist carvings and memorial stones, create a contemplative atmosphere along what is effectively a mountain path through deep history. The main hall at the end of this approach, rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1609, is a National Treasure โ lavishly decorated with painted fusuma screens, ornate wood carvings, and gold-leaf alcove artwork.
The Entsuinmausoleum and garden, adjacent to Zuiganji, preserves a peaceful moss garden with hidden Christian symbolism โ evidence of the Masamune family's complex engagement with Christianity during the persecution era.
The five viewpoints around the bay offer increasingly elevated perspectives on the island landscape. The most accessible, Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park, provides the "classic" view that appears on countless travel postcards.
Getting There & Tips
JR Senseki Line from Sendai to Matsushima-Kaigan (about 40 minutes). Zuiganji entrance requires a fee; the bay views and shore promenade are free. A full day is needed to cover both cultural sites and cruise.
Best Time to Visit
All seasons offer rewards. Autumn foliage (OctoberโNovember) against the evergreen pine islands is spectacular. Spring cherry blossoms and summer cruises are also popular seasons.
