Murou Ryuketsu Shrine

In Uda City, Nara Prefecture, near Murou-ji Temple known as the Koya for Women, sits Murou Ryuketsu Shrine. An old shrine whose principal deity is Takaokami no Kami, the dragon god of water, it is a storied sacred site where the imperial court performed rain-praying rituals in the Heian period. In the valley behind the shrine is the rock cave of Myokichijo Ryuketsu, said to be where the dragon god dwells, a mystical place wrapped in a solemn air. Today it is also known for blessings of matchmaking, and it draws popularity as a quiet power spot held within a deep stand of cedars.

Highlights

- Myokichijo Ryuketsu: A mystical rock cave said to be where the dragon god dwells, in a valley a little apart from the shrine, with a solemn air about it. - Cedar-Lined Approach: The approach lined with great cedars piercing the sky is full of a pure and divine atmosphere. - Halls of the Old Shrine: The vermilion halls stand out against the deep green and tell of a long history. - Clear Stream near the Dragon Cave: The clear water flowing beside the dragon cave heightens the mystical atmosphere all the more.

Enjoying the Seasons

Early summer with fresh green makes the cedars lush, and you can enjoy a refreshing visit along with the sound of the valley water. Autumn brings beautiful foliage nearby, and it bustles with people touring it together with Murou-ji. Winter is wrapped in stillness, a season to feel an even more sacred air. As the dragon cave involves a short walk, visiting in comfortable clothing year-round is recommended.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: 1297 Murou, Uda City, Nara - Access: By bus from Muroguchi-Ono Station (Kintetsu), or about 15 minutes by car - Hours: Grounds open all day - Admission: Free

A Quick Tip

Myokichijo Ryuketsu is along a valley a few minutes by car from the shrine, also reachable on foot. As it is a sacred site, worship quietly and with respect. Murou-ji, famous for its National Treasure five-story pagoda, is very close, so touring them together lets you fully enjoy the history and nature of eastern Nara. As the ground in the mountains can get wet, comfortable shoes are recommended.
