In southern Niigata Prefecture, Tokamachi is one of Japan snowiest regions, spread with beautiful countryside scenery. The dreamlike Hoshitoge rice terraces floating in a sea of clouds and the works of the Echigo Tsumari Art Field staged across the hills blend nature and art wonderfully. Because the sights are scattered in the mountains, this course assumes travel by rental car to tour the terraces and museums in a day.

Course Route

7:00 A morning spectacle at Hoshitoge rice terraces Early in the morning, when conditions align, you may see the terraces floating in a sea of clouds. In the season when the terraces are filled with water, the surface mirroring the sunrise is breathtaking. Viewing is free, but the terraces are private farmland, so refrain from stepping onto the ridge paths.

9:30 Matsudai Nohbutai An area dotted with outdoor artworks staged in the countryside. Walk and view pieces that melt into the fields and hills. Many outdoor works can be seen freely, but the field museum exhibits are paid.

11:30 Lunch at a country eatery Head to an eatery serving local cuisine made with regional ingredients. Enjoy flavors unique to this land, such as hegisoba and wild vegetable dishes.

13:00 Echigo Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art MonET The hub of the Echigo Tsumari Art Field. Take your time to view the varied contemporary works displayed inside and out. Admission for the permanent exhibition is about 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for students as a guide, with a separate fee during special exhibitions. It opens 10:00 to 17:00 as a base and closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with some seasonal variation.

15:00 Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel The art space inside a tunnel overlooking the gorge is a popular photo spot with a water mirror effect. The scenery woven from columnar joint cliffs and art is a must see. Admission is about 1,200 yen for adults and 500 yen for students in high season from late April to mid November, and about 1,000 yen for adults in the off season, as a guide. It opens 8:30 to 17:00 with last reception at 16:30, and hours are shortened in winter.

16:30 Souvenir shopping at a roadside station Visit a roadside station lined with local produce and specialties. Choose rice from this famed rice region, or processed goods, as souvenirs.

17:30 Leave Tokamachi Head home savoring the afterglow of the day. If time allows, stop by once more to see a favorite work.

Highlights

The greatest sight of Tokamachi is the Hoshitoge rice terraces. Layered again and again across the slope, they hold a beauty that could be called an original Japanese landscape. The early morning sea of clouds and the sky reflected in water filled terraces enchant visitors. Another charm is the contemporary art spread across the whole countryside. Scenery where nature and works become one is an experience found nowhere else. The tunnel art at Kiyotsukyo is also not to be missed.

Access and Tips

The sights of Tokamachi are spread over a wide area and public transport is limited, so a rental car is essential. The Hoshitoge terraces are best at dawn, so staying nearby the night before brings peace of mind. Some roads around the terraces are narrow, so drive carefully. The art works can change their opening status by season and day.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Hoshitoge rice terraces: viewing is free. However, the terraces are private farmland and stepping onto the ridge paths is prohibited. The surrounding roads are narrow, so use the designated parking spaces.
  • Echigo Tsumari MonET: the permanent exhibition is about 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for students as a guide, with a separate fee for special exhibitions. It opens 10:00 to 17:00 as a base and closes Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Hours can extend in some seasons, so confirm officially.
  • Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel: about 1,200 yen for adults in high season from late April to mid November, and about 1,000 yen for adults in the off season, as a guide. It opens 8:30 to 17:00 with last reception at 16:30, shortened in winter. Entry may be limited when crowded.
  • Matsudai Nohbutai: outdoor works can be seen freely, but the field museum exhibits are paid.
  • Getting around: because sights are scattered in the mountains, a rental car is all but essential. If you aim for the Hoshitoge terraces at dawn, staying the night before is handy.

A Quick Tip

A sea of clouds is a natural phenomenon seen only when weather and temperature difference align. Consider yourself lucky if you see it and plan without strain. The terraces are places that farmers carefully protect. Do not step onto the ridge paths and mind your manners while viewing. Kiyotsukyo is a popular photo spot and gets crowded, so visiting with time to spare brings peace of mind.
