Mt. Yahiko — The Sacred Peak Power Spot Protecting Echigo Province

Rising 634 meters on the border between Yahiko Village and Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture, Mt. Yahiko is a sacred peak commanding a sweeping view of the Echigo Plain. Long revered as the sacred body-mountain of Yahiko Shrine at its foot, the mountain itself is known as an immense power spot. From the summit, a grand panorama of the Sea of Japan, Sado Island, and the Echigo Plain unfolds, letting visitors feel the energy of the land with their whole body. Its height of 634 meters is exactly that of Tokyo Skytree, a figure locals fondly point out.

Using the Yahiko Ropeway, visitors can rise from the base to near the summit in a short time. From the summit observation area, a superb view of the Echigo Plain and the Sea of Japan spreads out, and on clear days Sado Island is visible on the horizon.

Enjoying the Seasons

Autumn (October to November) sets the whole mountain ablaze with color, with Maple Valley in Yahiko Park at its finest. Winter (December to February) offers the hush of a sacred mountain amid snow scenery.

Practical Travel Notes

• The summit is cooler and windier than the lowlands. Even in summer, bringing an extra layer is reassuring.
• If you climb the front approach on foot, there are rocky and steep sections, so prepare hiking shoes and water and set out with time to spare.
• The Yahiko Skyline mountain road also lets you drive close to the summit by car. Operation and road conditions change with the seasons.
• On holidays in the foliage season the ropeway can be crowded, causing wait times. Arriving early in the morning is recommended.

• Elevation: 634 metres
• Access (by train): It is about 1 kilometre and roughly 15 minutes on foot from Yahiko Station on the JR Yahiko Line to Yahiko Shrine. A free shuttle bus (29 seats, about 2 minutes) runs from beside the shrine's main hall to the ropeway base station, timed to connect with departures and arrivals
• Mount Yahiko Ropeway: The ride from the base station to the summit station (32-passenger cabins) takes about 5 minutes. 1,500 yen return and 800 yen one way for adults, 750 yen return and 400 yen one way for children (aged 3 to 11), and free of charge for children under 3. Pets cost 400 yen return and 200 yen one way (bring a carrier). In winter (December to March) the ropeway is closed every Tuesday
• Panorama Tower (revolving observation tower): Operates from April to the end of November, from 9:30 (every 20 minutes on weekdays, every 15 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays). 650 yen for adults and 350 yen for children, with a ride of about 8 minutes
• Climbing Car: Runs between the Mount Yahiko summit car park and the observation building, taking about 1 minute. A return trip costs 380 yen for adults and 260 yen for children, and a one-way trip 220 yen for adults and 160 yen for children
• Yahikoyama Skyline: Prefectural Route 561, 13.7 kilometres long in total, toll free. It is closed to vehicles for the winter every year from 1 December to 31 March (until the snow melts). It is also closed year-round overnight from 23:00 to 5:00 the following morning. Motorcycles are banned from the entire route, from the Sarugababa gate over the summit to the Mase gate. From Yahiko Shrine it is about 25 minutes by car to the summit via the Sarugababa gate, or about 35 minutes via the Iwamuro and Mase gate
• Goshinbyo (the inner sanctuary of Yahiko Shrine): About 15 to 20 minutes on foot from Mount Yahiko Summit Park. It enshrines Ameno-kagoyama-no-mikoto and his consort Umashihoyahime-no-mikoto
