Oita's Hot-Spring Culture: The Diverse Water Qualities and Bathing Culture That Japan's No. 1 Hot-Spring Prefecture Boasts

First in the nation in both the number of hot-spring sources and the volume of gushing water—Oita Prefecture is truly a land that should be called a sacred ground of hot springs. Beppu, famed worldwide, and atmospheric Yufuin are not all there is. Secret hot springs welling quietly in the mountains, humble communal bathhouses where locals go every day, rare water qualities where carbonated bubbles faintly wrap your skin... Oita's hot springs show a new face each time you visit. Once you touch their charm, you will surely want to come again and again.

Nagayu Onsen

Nagayu Onsen, bearing the byname Japan's No. 1 carbonated spring, is a famous hot spring known to those in the know, standing quietly in the mountains of Taketa City. Its water quality is a carbon-dioxide spring containing carbonation so high in concentration it rivals the spa resorts of Germany, and when you soak in the tub, fine fizzing bubbles gently wrap your whole body. It is said to promote blood circulation, and the after-bath warmth lingering on the skin is a characteristic. A lukewarm bath that yet warms you to the core, repeat visitors never cease.

Furthermore, an experience unique to Nagayu Onsen is drinking the spring water. While the culture of drinking hot-spring water is common at European spa towns, it is still rare in Japan, and Nagayu is its leading example. The sight of people enjoying drinking the spring water while strolling the hot-spring town is a scene you can see only here. As for the symbol of Nagayu, there is the open-air bath Gani-yu, trailing steam on the bank of the Seri River. The mixed-bathing tub, set up almost in the open along the river, has an exceptional sense of openness.

To casually experience the carbonated spring, the exterior bath Lamune Onsenkan, designed by the architect Terunobu Fujimori, is popular. A guide for day-trip bathing is about 500 yen for adults and about 200 yen for children, and you can enjoy an indoor bath and the signature carbonated spring where your whole body is wrapped in silver bubbles (there are closed days).

Access: As a guide, about 80 minutes by bus from Oita Station, or about 40 minutes by bus from JR Bungo-Taketa Station. Exterior baths and inns are dotted within a few minutes' walk of the Nagayu Onsen bus stop. About 20 minutes by car from Bungo-Taketa Station.

Sujiyu Onsen

Sujiyu Onsen, embraced in the deep bosom of the Kuju mountain range, is a hot-spring area welling at a high altitude of about 1,000 meters, truly worthy of the name secret hot spring. It is also an old hot spring with over 1,000 years of history, said to have been opened in the year 958. Surrounded by green-rich mountains, when you step into this land where the very air is crystal clear, you feel as if the fatigue of daily life slips smoothly away.

The specialty here is a dynamic bathing experience you cannot taste elsewhere—the communal bath Utase Daiyokujo (the large pounding-water bath). The pounding-water bath, where as many as 18 columns of water pour down with a roar from a height of about 3 meters, powerfully loosens the stiffness of shoulders, neck, and back. It is passed down that the origin of the hot spring's name is that it is effective for ailments of the muscles, and it has long been said to be good for neuralgia and rheumatism as well. For a body stiffened by desk work, it is truly like a reward.

The scale of the hot-spring area is small with a homey atmosphere, and being able to spend time slowly without crowds is also one of its charms. At night a sky full of stars spreads, and you are wrapped in a quiet you cannot taste in the city.

Access: About 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Oita Station. From the Kyushu Expressway direction, the Kokonoe IC is the nearest, and you access it via the Yamanami Highway. The Utase Daiyokujo is open year-round, with business hours of 6:00 to 21:30, and the fee is a guide of 400 yen for ages 6 and up, free for age 5 and under.

Communal Bathhouse Culture

The town of Beppu regards hot springs not as something to sightsee but as something to live with. The communal bathhouses dotted around the city (locally also called sento) include many baths that can be used at reasonable prices in the range of around 100-some yen, and the sight of local elderly people and neighbors enjoying the bath from the morning blends in as a scene of daily life.

For tourists, this communal bathhouse is the best opportunity to touch the real Beppu. An unadorned, simple tub, different again from the hot springs of luxurious inns. The neighbor sitting beside you cheerfully tells you about Beppu's history and local recommendations—it is also a place where such chance encounters are born.

Within Beppu City there are many communal bathhouses, and touring them with a hot-spring-hopping feeling is the connoisseur's way of enjoying it. Among them are bathhouses whose Showa-retro exterior remains just as it was, spots not to be missed by architecture lovers as well.

Recommended time of day: 6 to 8 a.m. when locals bustle, or 4 to 6 p.m. in the evening. An early-morning bath when there are still few tourists is exceptional as a travel memory.

Access

To tour hot-spring areas around Oita Prefecture, making JR Oita Station your starting point is the smoothest. Using a rental car, you can efficiently tour Nagayu, Sujiyu, and the Beppu communal bathhouses.

  • Nagayu Onsen: About 80 minutes by bus from Oita Station. Using a bus or car from JR Bungo-Taketa Station is also possible.
  • Sujiyu Onsen: About 1 hour 30 minutes by car from Oita Station. Get off at the Kokonoe IC and head toward the Yamanami Highway.
  • Beppu (communal bathhouses): To Beppu Station from Oita Station on the JR Nippo Main Line. Many communal bathhouses are within walking distance of the station.

Practical Travel Notes

  • Recommended season and time of day: October to November with beautiful foliage and May with fresh greenery are good chances to enjoy the mountains' colors from an open-air bath. In winter, the contrast of steam and snowy scenery is also a highlight. For communal bathhouses, the early morning and evening when locals bustle let you feel the local atmosphere and are recommended.
  • Avoiding crowds and time guide: If you hop between hot springs of differing water qualities, securing about two nights and three days including travel lets you enjoy it with room to spare. Since popular exterior baths tend to get crowded during the daytime on weekends, mornings or evenings are the target.
  • Nearby real spots: Taketa City, where Nagayu Onsen is, has the Oka Castle Ruins; the Kokonoe and Sujiyu direction has the magnificent nature and highlands of the Kuju mountains; and Beppu has the hell tour—famous spots you can enjoy as a set with the hot springs are all here.
  • Budget sense: Day-trip exterior baths and communal bathhouses are reasonable at around several hundred yen, and you can casually hop between several baths. Lodging varies with the grade of the inn.

A Word of Advice

Since communal bathhouses often do not provide shampoo or body soap, bringing toiletries and a towel is recommended. At mixed open-air baths, women having a bathing garment is reassuring. Since the stone paving of Gani-yu and riverside baths is slippery, easy-on-and-off footwear is convenient. Following the manners of the locals, be sure to rinse off (kakeyu) before entering the tub. The hot-spring indulgence of touring baths of differing water qualities is a luxury unique to Oita that any hot-spring lover wants to fulfill once.

📚 Sources

For information on Oita's hot-spring culture, the main references are the tourism guidance published by local governments and tourism associations such as Taketa City, Kokonoe Town, and Beppu City, and the guidance of each hot-spring town and public bath. Details of the Lamune Onsenkan in Nagayu Onsen, the Utase Daiyokujo in Suji Onsen, and Beppu's public baths can be traced through such guidance. Each facility's hours, fees, and closing days may change, so please confirm the latest details through official sources before you visit; also check etiquette for mixed-bathing open-air baths.

Visitor Checklist

  • Estimated time: To hop between springs of differing qualities, securing about three days and two nights, including travel, allows a relaxed visit; day-use outdoor baths can be enjoyed briefly at each spot.
  • What to bring: Public baths often lack shampoo and body soap, so bring toiletries and a towel; at mixed open-air baths women may prefer a bathing garment, and riverside baths such as Gani-yu have slippery cobbles, so easy-on footwear helps.
  • Suggested route: Using JR Oita Station as a base, tour by rental car Nagayu Onsen (Lamune Onsenkan and Gani-yu), Suji Onsen (Utase Daiyokujo), and Beppu's public baths noted in the article, optionally combining with the Oka Castle ruins in Taketa or the Kuju Mountains.
  • Crowd tips: Popular outdoor baths are busiest midday on weekends, so mornings and evenings are best.
