Since walking to the main keep ruins takes about an hour round trip, also tuck drinks for hydration and a light snack into your daypack. Admission is reasonable at 300 yen for adults (as of 2024), yet the emotion you gain is worth many times that. Since the area near the entrance tends to be crowded on spring weekends, visiting in the time slot right after the gate opens is the wise choice.

Access: "Bungo-Nakamura Station" on the JR Kyudai Main Line is the nearest station, from which you can access the various spots in Kokonoe Town by bus or taxi (travel time is about 15–40 minutes depending on the destination). Since the highlights are dotted across a vast area, using your own car or a rental car is by far more convenient. Access from the "Kokonoe IC" on the Oita Expressway is smooth, and being able to enjoy the spring mountain scenery while driving is also a real pleasure unique to Kokonoe. The parking lots are relatively roomy, but when the cherry-blossom viewing period overlaps with a weekend, we recommend arriving in the early-morning hours.
