Yufuin Morning Mist and Hot Spring Streets — Autumn Scenery and a Town Walk
Yufuin Morning Mist and Hot Spring Streets
When morning mist rises from the rice paddies around Yufuin and the twin peaks of Yufu-dake emerge from the cloud, one of Japan's most serene resort scenes reveals itself. Yufuin, in the mountains of central Oita Prefecture, has cultivated an image deliberately distinct from nearby Beppu: intimate, artistic, quietly sophisticated, and devoted to the slow pleasures of good food, gallery browsing, and unhurried bathing.
Highlights
The Yufuin-no-Mori scenic train from Hakata is itself an attraction — a forest-green vintage-style express threading through mountain scenery before arriving at the compact station. From there, the main street (Yufuin Floral Village road and湯の坪街道) winds between artisan shops, cafés, and galleries selling Yufuin glass, local pottery, and handmade crafts toward Lake Kinrinko — a mirror-still mountain lake fed by hot springs, surrounded by willow trees that dissolve into mist on cool mornings. Boutique ryokan with exceptional food and private outdoor baths are Yufuin's signature offering; inns here are among the finest in Kyushu. The open-air Yufuin Yunotsubo Gallery cluster showcases local artists. Floral Village, a European-themed craft district near the station, is popular with younger visitors.
Getting There & Tips
The Yufuin-no-Mori limited express runs from Hakata (about 2 hours 10 minutes) and Oita (45 minutes). Advance reservation for this train is essential, especially in autumn. The station area and Lake Kinrinko are easily walkable. Book ryokan 3–6 months ahead for autumn weekends.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning in autumn (October–November) produces the most magical mist scenes. Cherry blossoms at Lake Kinrinko in late March are superb. Summer mornings before 9 AM capture dew and mist before the tourist crowds arrive. Winter evenings in ryokan, with snow on Yufu-dake visible through the rotemburo steam, are equally memorable.
