Karatsu Castle Niji no Matsubara and Yobuko One Day Model Course

Course Route

9:00 Start at Karatsu Castle From the keep atop Mitoshima hill you can see the whole of Karatsu Bay and Niji no Matsubara. Cross Maizuru Bridge and enjoy the morning air of the old town. An inclined elevator runs up the hill, so it is easy even if you are not confident in your stamina.

10:30 Stroll through Niji no Matsubara A special scenic spot where about a million black pines stretch for roughly 4.5 kilometers. Drive or walk through the grove and take in the salty breeze.

12:00 Lunch of squid in Yobuko The live squid of the Genkai Sea is so fresh it looks transparent. Savor the local specialty of fresh sliced squid.

13:30 Walk the Yobuko morning market street Enjoy the lingering atmosphere of the market that runs until midday, and pick up dried fish and local flavors as souvenirs. The Yobuko morning market is counted among Japan three great morning markets.

14:30 To the Nagoya Castle ruins The vast ruins of the castle Toyotomi Hideyoshi built as a base for his campaigns. Stone walls and a sprawling layout recall its past glory. It is designated a special national historic site.

16:30 Return to Karatsu to close the day Drive along the coast at dusk and look back on the day.

Highlights

Karatsu Castle is also called Maizuru Castle, and the panorama from the keep is a highlight of any Karatsu visit. It is a sea facing castle said to have been built by Terazawa Hirotaka in the Keicho era. Niji no Matsubara is one of Japan three great pine groves alongside Miho no Matsubara and Kehi no Matsubara, and the green of its straight pine line is spectacular. In Yobuko freshness is everything, and the clear flesh and firm texture of the squid can only be tasted here.

Access and Tips

Karatsu Castle is about a 20 minute walk from Karatsu Station. A car is more convenient than public transport for reaching Yobuko, about 30 minutes from central Karatsu. Niji no Matsubara lies on the way, so it fits easily into a driving route. Squid restaurants get crowded at lunchtime, so arriving early is recommended.

A Quick Tip

Squid offerings in Yobuko can change with the daily catch. If you really want to try it, check with the restaurant in advance. On windy days a light jacket brings peace of mind.

• How this course works: A one-day route taking about 7.5 hours (9:00-16:30). It is about 30 minutes by car from central Karatsu to Yobuko. Public transport services are infrequent, so traveling by car is the efficient option
• Opening hours and closing days of each site: The keep of Karatsu Castle is open 9:00-17:00 (last entry 16:40; hours vary by season) and closed from December 29 to 31. The castle keep grounds (the upper level of Maizuru Park) are open 5:00-22:00, and the wisteria trellis on the middle level of Maizuru Park is open at all times. The Yobuko Morning Market is held every day except New Year's Day, from 7:30 until around 12:00
• Cost guide: The keep of Karatsu Castle costs 500 yen for general visitors (aged 15 and over), 250 yen for elementary and junior high school students, and is free of charge for preschool children. The Maizuru Park elevator costs 100 yen one way for general visitors and 50 yen for elementary and junior high school students (free of charge for preschool children and those aged 70 and over). Niji no Matsubara pine grove is free of charge to walk around as you please
• Access: Karatsu Castle is about a 20-minute walk from Karatsu Station. Niji no Matsubara is right by Nijinomatsubara Station on the JR Chikuhi Line, about 20 minutes by car from Karatsu Interchange on the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway, or about 45 minutes from Taku Interchange on the Nagasaki Expressway
