Course Route
9:00 Start at Karatsu Castle From the keep atop Mitoshima hill you can see the whole of Karatsu Bay and Niji no Matsubara. Cross Maizuru Bridge and enjoy the morning air of the old town.
10:30 Stroll through Niji no Matsubara A special scenic spot where about a million black pines stretch for roughly 4.5 kilometers. Drive or walk through the grove and take in the salty breeze.
12:00 Lunch of squid in Yobuko The live squid of the Genkai Sea is so fresh it looks transparent. Savor the local specialty of fresh sliced squid.
13:30 Walk the Yobuko morning market street Enjoy the lingering atmosphere of the market that runs until midday, and pick up dried fish and local flavors as souvenirs.
14:30 To the Nagoya Castle ruins The vast ruins of the castle Toyotomi Hideyoshi built as a base for his campaigns. Stone walls and a sprawling layout recall its past glory.
16:30 Return to Karatsu to close the day Drive along the coast at dusk and look back on the day.
Highlights
Karatsu Castle is also called Maizuru Castle, and the panorama from the keep is a highlight of any Karatsu visit. Niji no Matsubara is one of Japan three great pine groves alongside Miho no Matsubara and Kehi no Matsubara, and the green of its straight pine line is spectacular. In Yobuko freshness is everything, and the clear flesh and firm texture of the squid can only be tasted here.
Access and Tips
Karatsu Castle is about a 20 minute walk from Karatsu Station. A car is more convenient than public transport for reaching Yobuko, about 30 minutes from central Karatsu. Niji no Matsubara lies on the way, so it fits easily into a driving route. Squid restaurants get crowded at lunchtime, so arriving early is recommended.
A Quick Tip
Squid offerings in Yobuko can change with the daily catch. If you really want to try it, check with the restaurant in advance. On windy days a light jacket brings peace of mind.
