Course Route

9:30 Start at Yoshinogari Historical Park Enter from the gateway zone. The sheer size of one of Japan largest Yayoi settlements is the first surprise.

10:30 Tour the moated settlement zone Visit reconstructed watchtowers, pit dwellings, and raised floor storehouses to experience Yayoi life.

12:00 Lunch of ancient food in the park Enjoy a lunch that reflects Yayoi food culture, such as a set with ancient rice and clam soup.

13:30 Move to the Saga castle town About 30 minutes by car to the center of Saga, the stage of the late Edo reforms.

14:30 Visit the Saga Castle Honmaru History Museum At the museum that first reconstructed a main keep hall in Japan, learn about the modernization of the late Edo Saga clan.

Highlights

The Yoshinogari ruins are one of the largest moated settlements of the Yayoi period, surrounded by a moat about 2.5 kilometers long. Reconstructed buildings spread across the grounds and vividly convey how people lived. The Saga Castle Honmaru History Museum features a reconstructed hall of about 2500 square meters, offering a clear look at the path of the Saga clan that led the modernization of Japan in the late Edo era.

Access and Tips

Yoshinogari Historical Park is about a 15 minute walk from JR Yoshinogari Koen Station or Kanzaki Station. The Saga Castle Honmaru History Museum is about 15 minutes by bus from JR Saga Station. The park is vast, so easy walking shoes are essential. Spending a full day at a relaxed pace lets you enjoy both sites thoroughly.
