Ureshino Onsen
Ureshino Onsen, in the southwest of Saga Prefecture, is a historic spa town mentioned in an ancient regional chronicle from the Nara period. Its sodium bicarbonate and chloride waters are said to smooth and soften the skin, earning it a place among Japans three great beautifying hot springs.
Highlights
Dip your hand into the water and you immediately feel its distinctive silky texture. The soft, almost soapy water is said to gently wash away old skin, leaving you smooth after the bath. The town is dotted with public baths, day-use facilities, and footbaths, and visitors stroll from bath to bath in cotton yukata robes. A local specialty is onsen yudofu, tofu simmered in the mineral water until it melts into a mellow, creamy dish.
Enjoying the Seasons
In spring, cherry blossoms line the Ureshino River that runs through town, and early summer paints the surrounding tea fields a vivid green. Ureshino is a noted producer of fine tea, and the new-tea season brings fragrant cups to enjoy. Autumn evenings invite long, unhurried soaks, and in winter a bowl of hot tofu with warm sake heats you from within.
Access and Basic Information
The Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen station at Ureshino Onsen is just a few minutes away by car, making public transport access convenient. It is also close to the Ureshino interchange on the Nagasaki Expressway. Many inns and facilities welcome day-trip bathers, so the famous waters are easy to enjoy.
A Quick Tip
The rich, slippery water is very moisturizing, but long soaks can leave you light-headed, so rest and drink water often. A block of onsen tofu makes a well-loved souvenir.
