Tara Takezaki Onsen

In southern Saga Prefecture, along the Ariake Sea in the Takezaki area of Tara Town, lies Tara Takezaki Onsen. Its sodium bicarbonate water is clear and faintly salty, and together with its sea-facing setting it is known as a scenic spa.

Highlights

Open-air baths overlooking the Ariake Sea offer the distinctive coastal scenery of one of Japans greatest tidal ranges. Vast tidal flats appear at low tide, while high tide brings the water close, so the view changes with the hour. Above all, this area is famous for Takezaki crab. Many come specifically for the meaty, high-quality crab, and the chance to enjoy both hot springs and seafood in one trip is a real draw.

Enjoying the Seasons

Takezaki crab has different peak seasons for males and females, so it can be enjoyed year round. Firm-fleshed males are best in summer, while females rich with roe shine in winter. Spring offers gentle scenery along the mild Ariake coast, and autumn brings beautiful sunsets in clear air, making it worth visiting through every season.

Access and Basic Information

Inns and facilities are scattered along the Ariake coast of Tara Town beside the national highway. Situated on the road linking the Nagasaki and Kashima directions, it is convenient to reach by car. The nearest JR station is some distance away, so a car or taxi is recommended.

A Quick Tip

Reservations are the sure way to enjoy crab dishes. The Ariake tides shift in timing day by day, so if you want the tidal-flat or high-tide view, check a tide table before you go for extra enjoyment.
