Takeo Onsen
In the heart of Takeo City, Takeo Onsen is an ancient spa recorded in a regional chronicle some thirteen centuries ago. Its soft, alkaline simple thermal water is gentle on the skin and has long been cherished as a bath for beautiful skin.
Highlights
The vermilion gate at the entrance to the spa district is said to have been designed by the architect behind Tokyo Station, and its joinery, built without nails, is a sight in itself. Beyond the gate stand historic public bathhouses where you can enjoy the famous waters within atmospheric wooden bath architecture. The clear, mild water gently unwinds the fatigue of travel.
Enjoying the Seasons
Spring brings cherry blossoms around the spa town and splendid azaleas at the Mifuneyama Rakuen garden in the city. From fresh early-summer greenery to autumn foliage, the gardens are beautiful through every season. On summer evenings the grounds are sometimes lit up, and a stroll and soak in that dreamlike atmosphere is truly special.
Access and Basic Information
Takeo Onsen station on the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen is within walking distance, making access easy. It is also close to the Takeo-Kitagata interchange on the Nagasaki Expressway, so driving is convenient too. The public bathhouses accept day-trip visitors, so it is easy to drop in.
A Quick Tip
The drum tower inside the gate is sometimes open to view at certain hours, so check before your visit. With so many historic buildings, allowing time for an unhurried stroll makes the trip more rewarding.
