Okuizumo

In the time of day when morning mist faintly covers the valley, a scene that seems unreal, as if the boundary between reality and dream had melted, sometimes spreads out. Furthermore, the contrast of the terraced rice fields of Nita rice and the brocade autumn is a spectacular sight unique to Okuizumo. As a local way to enjoy it, dropping by Okuizumo's roadside station "Okuizumo Orochi Loop" is a must. The impact is so great you can't help but let out "Was there such a place in Shimane?" The observation deck can be used for free, and a welcome point is that the parking lot is maintained, so you can drop by casually. Also, to wrap up your trip, do savor rice balls made with locally produced Nita rice and the hearth-grilled Okuizumo wagyu beef. The moment the umami of the carefully raised wagyu spreads through your mouth, along with the afterglow of the foliage, you'll surely feel autumn from the core of your body.

Best Season: Late October to Mid-November Along the valley, early November has the deepest coloring, and in the early-morning 6 to 8 a.m. hours, you can sometimes encounter the fantastical sight where morning mist and foliage overlap. Since the expression changes between daytime and early morning as if visiting an entirely different place, do stay the night and challenge yourself to wake up early.

Access

For Train Use: "Izumo-Yokota Station" or "Bingo-Ochiai Station" on the JR Kisuki Line is nearest. About 2 hours from Matsue Station by the Kisuki Line. Note that the "Okuizumo Orochi-go" open-car train permanently ended service on November 23, 2023 and cannot be boarded. The current sightseeing train on the Kisuki Line is "Ametuchi" (started April 7, 2024), running between Yonago and Izumo-Yokota once daily (mainly on weekends), all-reserved Green Car seats. For the 2026 autumn schedule, contact JR West Yonago Branch (0859-32-8056).

For Car Use: About 40 minutes via National Route 314 from the "Mitoya-Kisuki IC" of the Matsue Expressway. The road along the loop bridge has wonderful views, and the drive itself becomes a joy of the trip. However, since the roads get crowded on weekends during the foliage season, we strongly recommend a weekday visit, or an early arrival before 8 a.m.

💡 Tip for Travelers: The mountain areas have low temperatures, and mornings and evenings get cold enough to need a down jacket even in October. Layerable clothing and comfortable walking shoes are essential. Since the parking lot often fills up on weekends at the foliage peak, arriving at the roadside station's parking lot in the 8 a.m. hour is better. Also, since the mountain areas have places where smartphone signal is hard to reach, downloading maps offline in advance gives peace of mind.

Mt. Sanbe

Mt. Sanbe (elevation 1,126 m), towering solidly in the center of Shimane, overwhelms viewers with the sense of scale woven by dynamic terrain and autumn foliage unique to an active volcano. The way the slopes of the caldera terrain, where multiple peaks line up, color all at once is so powerful it's as if the earth were clad in flame. The sight where red, orange, and yellow overlap in layer upon layer and fill the caldera makes you gasp, thinking "Is there autumn foliage this great in Shimane?" Among Shimane's foliage spots, it's a place we want to recommend loudly especially to those who want to experience "the strength of nature."

Mt. Sanbe's greatest charm is that you can not only gaze at it but walk into the foliage. The maintained hiking courses accommodate a wide range from beginners to the experienced, and on the course heading to Mt. Osanbe (the summit) (about 3 to 4 hours round trip), you can feel with your whole body the gradient of foliage that changes as you gain altitude. At your feet, golden-dyed beech leaves pile up, and a dry crunching sound echoes each time you tread — a luxurious moment of enjoying autumn with all five senses. From the summit, a grand panorama spreads where you can command a view to Mt. Daisen and even the Sea of Japan, and the brocade-autumn Sanbe Plateau spreading below makes you forget the fatigue of climbing in an instant. When the sense of accomplishment of "I climbed all the way up there" overlaps with the spectacular scenery before your eyes, more than a few travelers are said to be on the verge of tears.

Hidden Spot Information: The promenade around the Sanbe Nature Museum Sahimel is a little-known spot where you can enjoy a quiet foliage stroll with few tourists. Since a paved, flat path continues, it's also perfect for those not confident in hiking and families with small children. On clear nights you can also do stargazing, so stay a night at Sanbe Onsen and obtain this cosmic-scale reward too. And to soothe the fatigue of the trip, the foliage viewed from the open-air bath of Sanbe Onsen is exceptional in a word. Gazing at the colored mountains spreading before your eyes while soaking in the bath, you're enveloped in a sensation as if time were melting away. The contrast between the mountain cold air touching your flushed body after bathing and the foliage is truly the finest reward of the trip.

Best Season: Mid-October to Early November Near the summit begins coloring from mid-October, and late October to early November is the best timing when the whole mountain is dyed. Since clouds tend to cover the mountain in the morning, an afternoon on a clear day is the perfect chance to enjoy the contrast of the clear blue sky and foliage. On the other hand, if you aim for the fantastical co-performance of mist and foliage that you can meet only in the morning hours, staying the night and starting to move from early morning is the smart move.

Access

For Car Use: About 50 minutes via National Route 184 from the "Izumo IC" of the San'in Expressway. From the Hiroshima direction, about 1 hour from the "Miyoshi IC," easy to access, and it's popular as a day-trip destination from various parts of the Chugoku region too. Setting your car navigation to "Sanbe Nature Museum Sahimel" or "Kokumin Kyukamura Sanbe" as the destination makes it smooth. At the foliage peak, the parking lots can fill up, so arriving early is wise. No official announcement of a temporary parking lot for the foliage season has been confirmed; check the Oda City Tourism Association website for the latest information before your visit.

For Public Transportation: About 50 minutes by Iwami Kotsu Bus "bound for Sanbe Onsen" from "Oda-shi Station" on the JR San'in Main Line. Since bus service is limited to a few per day, be sure to check the round-trip timetable in advance so you don't miss the bus. Combining a rental car increases your freedom even more.

💡 Tip for Travelers: If you challenge yourself to hiking, don't forget to carry trekking shoes, rain gear, and trail food. At the summit, the temperature is often 5 to 8°C lower than the lowlands, and gear that can cope with sudden weather changes gives peace of mind. Also, since bear-sighting information is sometimes issued, we strongly recommend checking the latest information at the management office before entering the mountain and bringing a bear bell. Beginners need not force themselves to aim for the summit; just strolling the promenades of the Nishinohara and Kitanohara areas is enough to fully enjoy autumn Mt. Sanbe.

Tsuwano

Tsuwano, called "the Little Kyoto of San'in," is the place with the most moist atmosphere among Shimane's famous foliage spots. The stone-paved streets that still strongly retain the vestiges of the castle town, the clusters of white-walled storehouses, and the gently flowing moats — autumn Tsuwano, with foliage piling up over that scenery, has a dreamlike beauty as if you've wandered into a single watercolor painting. Here there is a delicate, soft autumn entirely different from the majesty of Okuizumo and the dynamism of Mt. Sanbe.

The approach to Taikodani Inari Shrine is one of the most breathtaking sights in autumn Tsuwano. The way the tunnel of over 1,000 vermilion torii gates is enveloped in trees dyed red and yellow makes you feel a mystical beauty along with a somehow nostalgic warmth. The gradient of the vermilion of the torii and the crimson of the trees is a color scheme that no mixing of paints can reproduce, one that only nature can draw. Each time you walk the approach, you're enveloped in a sensation of being drawn into the age of myth. Also, the foliage along the lift heading to the Tsuwano Castle ruins is splendid, and from the mountaintop you can command a view of the entire red-colored castle town. Autumn Tsuwano, which locals unanimously call "my favorite season" — the meaning of those words will surely become clear the moment you visit.

As a local way to enjoy it: One of the greatest charms of Tsuwano's foliage is that there's little crowding. If you walk alone along the moat in the early morning, you can almost monopolize the serene sight of fallen leaves floating on the water surface. The moats where carp swim serenely, and the colors of the foliage reflected on the water surface — this sight is a very special gift that only travelers who know Tsuwano can obtain. On your travels, do enjoy a leisurely town walk with Tsuwano's specialty Genjimaki (a thin-baked confection wrapping red bean paste) in one hand. At long-established Japanese confectioneries, they sometimes demonstrate making it at the storefront, and the sweetness you bite into in the autumn air while watching the craftsman's handiwork is exceptional. Furthermore, the collaboration of the Yamaguchi Line, where the SL "Yamaguchi-go" runs, and the foliage is a spectacular sight that makes even non-railway-fans' hearts race. The figure of the SL passing through the tunnel of foliage while trailing black smoke has a power that makes you want to press the shutter any number of times. Check the operating days in advance and do set up your camera.

Best Season: Early November to Late November Tsuwano, which colors a little later than Okuizumo and Mt. Sanbe, is also ideal as a late-autumn destination. It's a place worthy of decorating the finale of a Shimane foliage trip. Strolling around the moat in the early-morning 7 to 9 a.m. hours, you can enjoy the foliage shining in the morning sun and the quiet waterside scenery in an almost reserved state. Since the expression changes as if a different town between daytime and early morning, it's well worth staying the night before and waking up early.

Access

For Train Use: Get off at "Tsuwano Station" on the JR Yamaguchi Line and you can access the main spots on foot. About 1 hour 20 minutes by the JR Yamaguchi Line limited express "Super Oki" from Shin-Yamaguchi Station. From within Shimane Prefecture, a welcome point is that it's surprisingly easy to access, about 30 minutes with a transfer at Masuda Station. Since the scale of the town is compactly gathered, combining walking and rental bicycles from the station as a base lets you tour the main spots without strain. Do also savor the pleasantness of leisurely riding a bicycle down the stone-paved roads.

For Car Use: About 40 minutes via National Route 187 from the "Muikaichi IC" of the Chugoku Expressway. Many of the city parking lots are free, and access by car is also very comfortable. A drive while enjoying the surrounding mountain-valley scenery continues along roads so beautiful that it becomes a highlight of the trip in itself.

💡 Tip for Travelers: Tsuwano can be spent relatively leisurely even on November weekends, but on days the SL "Yamaguchi-go" operates, tourists concentrate, and the area around the photography spots gets crowded. Those after the SL should secure a spot early. Those who want to avoid the crowds are recommended a weekday visit. The stone-paved roads become extremely slippery when wet with rain, so be sure to choose shoes with grip on rainy days. Since the whole town is compact and easy to walk, half a day to a day is enough to thoroughly enjoy it. If time allows, a moat stroll at dusk is also exceptional. The sight where the orange-dyed sky and the foliage on the water surface overlap will surely remain long in your travel memories.

Foliage Viewing Periods and How to Enjoy

The true joy of traveling this prefecture is that Shimane's foliage doesn't conclude with just one place. With Okuizumo (late October to mid-November) -> Mt. Sanbe (mid-October to early November) -> Tsuwano (early November to late November), the coloring timing shifts exquisitely by elevation and region, so if you build your route well, you can travel for nearly a week while taking over the "baton of foliage." Being able to encounter a different "face of autumn" at each place is a luxury unique to Shimane, with its vast nature and diverse history and culture.

As a tip for travel planning, a route visiting Mt. Sanbe first and heading south to Okuizumo -> Tsuwano is recommended. The flow from the summit, which colors early, toward the moist castle-town finale naturally completes the drama of the trip. A car is most convenient for moving between each spot, but by combining the Kisuki Line's sightseeing train "Ametuchi" and the Yamaguchi Line's SL "Yamaguchi-go" (check operating days in advance), you can have an unforgettable experience where the travel itself becomes the protagonist.

[Most Important] The Okuizumo Orochi Train Is No Longer Running

The Kisuki Line trolley train "Okuizumo Orochi" ended service on 23 November 2023. Shimane Kanko Navi has updated its page title to read "[Service Ended] Trolley Train Okuizumo Orochi," yet the same site's "Shimane Autumn Foliage Information" page still carries the heading "Enjoy Autumn on the Kisuki Line Trolley Train," with only a small footnote at the bottom noting that service has ended. Do not search for tickets based on the heading alone — there are none to find.

The current sightseeing train on the Kisuki Line is "Ametuchi ~Kisuki Line~" (service began 7 April 2024), running one return trip per day between Yonago and Izumo-Yokota, mainly on weekends. All seats are reserved Green Car seats. For the 2026 autumn timetable, contact JR West Yonago Branch (0859-32-8056).

Note that the Okuizumo Town official foliage information page was still displaying "as of 28 November 2025" at the time of research, before the 2026 season update. If you want real-time colour reports, check back once October arrives.

Oni no Shitaburui (Okuizumo Town)

Okuizumo Orochi Loop and Surrounding Facilities

• Okuizumo Orochi Loop: A double-loop road on National Route 314 between Sakane and Miinohara, featuring 11 bridges of varying sizes, 3 tunnels, and a 105 m elevation change. It is a public road, so there is no toll. The Michi-no-Eki Okuizumo Orochi Loop rest stop parking holds 66 standard cars and 7 large vehicles (0854-52-3111).
• Itohara Memorial Museum: Open 9:00–17:00 (last admission 16:00). Closed over the New Year period (30 December – 5 January) and on exhibition changeover days (approximately 5 days each in March, June, and September). Admission: general 1,000 yen / high school and university students 700 yen / primary and junior high school students 300 yen (winter rates: general 800 yen / 550 yen / 250 yen). Tel. 0854-52-0151.
• Okuizumo Tatara and Sword Museum: Open 9:30–16:30, closed Tuesdays (next day if a public holiday) and year-end / New Year period 28 December – 4 January. On Japanese sword-forging demonstration days (the 2nd Sunday and 4th Saturday of each month at 10:00 and 13:00), admission rises to 1,270 yen for adults / 630 yen for primary and junior high school students. Sanbe Kanko Lift (Oda City, Higashi-no-Hara)

No information on the number of parking spaces near the lift station could be found on the official website.

Tsuwano Castle Ruins Kanko Lift

※ The Tsuwano Town official website (updated 15 July 2025) states suspension as "weekdays from 1 December to the end of February, excluding 1, 2, and 3 January," while Shimane Kanko Navi states "operates 1–5 January." The two official sources disagree on the New Year period. The information from the town's official site, which has the more recent update date, has been adopted here.

Taikodani Inari Shrine (Tsuwano Town)

Admission and worship are free with no entrance charge. Parking is approximately 100 spaces, free (Shimane Kanko Navi). The typical peak period is mid- to late November, around the time of the Grand Festival (15–16 November). The opening and closing times for the shrine reception could not be confirmed on the official website (0856-72-0219).

Gakuenji Temple (Izumo City)

One of the latest-colouring spots in Shimane Prefecture, hosting an annual "Autumn Foliage Festival." The 2026 festival dates have not yet been announced.

Other Spots

• Tachikuekyo Gorge (Izumo City): Free admission, open for walking. Typical peak: late October – mid-November. Izumo Tourism Association 0853-31-9466.
• Hikimikyo Gorge (Masuda City): Comprises four areas — Mae-Hikimi, Oku-Hikimi, Omote-Hikimi, and Ura-Hikimi — with a typical peak period of mid-October to late November, the longest span of any spot in the prefecture. Ura-Hikimikyo has 50 free parking spaces. Hikimi Town Tourism Association 0856-56-0310.
