Nasu Yumoto Onsen

Rising at the foot of the Nasu mountain range, this is said to be the oldest hot spring in Tochigi Prefecture. Believed to have been discovered nearly 1,400 years ago, it has long been cherished as the heart of the Nasu hot spring district. Its cloudy white sulfur water carries the unmistakable air of a traditional healing spa.

Highlights

At the famous public bathhouse Shikanoyu, several baths of different temperatures stand side by side, and the old-fashioned method of bathing briefly in each, known as jikan-yu, is still carried on today. The source is hot, and the sulfur-scented water warms the body to its core. The legendary Sessho-seki stone lies nearby, making it easy to combine bathing with a stroll.

Enjoying the Seasons

From spring through summer, the refreshing highland air is delightful, and bathing amid fresh greenery is a special pleasure. Autumn brings vivid foliage on Mount Nasu, and winter offers snow-viewing baths. Thanks to the elevation, Nasu stays cool even in summer, which is part of its charm.

Access and Basic Information

It is common to reach the area by bus from JR Nasushiobara or Kuroiso stations. By car, take the Nasu interchange on the Tohoku Expressway and head north along the national route. Shikanoyu welcomes day-use bathers, so you can easily experience this renowned spring.

A Quick Tip

Shikanoyu has no showers, so the custom is to ladle water over yourself to adjust to the heat before entering. The sulfur content is strong, so it is best to remove any metal jewelry before bathing.
