Shiobara Onsen-kyo

Spreading along the Hoki River in Nasushiobara City, this hot spring district boasts over a thousand years of history. Eleven hot springs, including Oami, Fukuwata, Shiogama, and Monzen, are scattered throughout, and the great appeal is being able to enjoy the different water qualities of each. Blessed with riverside nature and abundant water, it is a varied and richly textured spa area.

Highlights

From clear colorless water to brownish and milky-white springs, the colors and minerals differ by source, making the act of onsen hopping itself a delight. The gorge is laced with suspension bridges and walking trails, and the view of the Hoki River from spots such as the Kurenai suspension bridge is superb. There are also many open-air baths and public bathhouses that make use of the plentiful water.

Enjoying the Seasons

Cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, and foliage in autumn give the gorge a different face in every season. Autumn in particular is famous as one of Shiobara representative foliage spots and draws many visitors. In winter you can savor quiet moments soaking amid snowy scenery.

Access and Basic Information

It is convenient to come by bus from JR Nasushiobara or Nishinasuno stations, and by car it is just off the Nishinasuno-Shiobara interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. Day-use bathing facilities and footbaths are plentiful, making casual visits easy.

A Quick Tip

Because the water differs from inn to inn, hopping between a few of them lets you feel the depth of Shiobara. Combine it with a walk along the gorge trails for a full day of enjoyment.
