01 | Kegon Falls (Nikko City)

Kegon Falls, a famous waterfall representing Oku-Nikko, has spectacular spray that falls all at once from a height of 97 meters. White mist drifts near the basin, lending a dreamlike atmosphere. In autumn the contrast of the surrounding autumn leaves and the falls reaches its peak, and you can aim for a miraculous composition capturing an orange-white-blue gradation in a single shot. The early time slot in the morning is recommended, as light shines in from the front and the whole falls looks radiant. From the viewing platform you descend to by elevator, shooting in a portrait composition with the falls placed in the center makes for a powerful shot.

Access: About 40 minutes by bus from JR and Tobu Nikko Station, get off at "Chuzenji Onsen," a 5-minute walk

02 | Lake Chuzenji (Nikko City)

The lake surface spreading with Mount Nantai in the background is a sacred ground for reflection photography, mirroring the mountain like a mirror on fine-weather days. Especially in the early morning there is no wind and the water surface is calm, so an inverted Mount Nantai is perfectly captured. In the autumn-leaf season the lakeside is dyed red and yellow, turning into a world just like a painting. While walking along the lakeside, try a frame composition treating the trees as a frame.

Access: About 45 minutes by bus from Tobu Nikko Station, get off right at "Chuzenji Onsen"

03 | Ashikaga Flower Park (Ashikaga City)

The great wisteria trellis, praised as the most beautiful in Japan, has an overwhelming presence. During the blooming period of April to May, the spectacle of purple, white, and pink wisteria filling the space overhead is truly another world. At night a light-up is held, and a dreamlike purple world spreads out. Standing in the center of the wisteria tunnel and capturing the arch of flowers continuing into the distance in a portrait composition completes a photo that scores 100 on social media! A first-thing-in-the-morning visit right after opening, when there are few people, is great.

Access: About a 10-minute walk from "Tomita Station" on the JR Ryomo Line

04 | Kirifuri Highlands (Nikko City)

The highlands spreading at an elevation of over 1,400 meters are a yellow spectacular spot where Nikko-kisuge (day lilies) bloom in profusion across the whole area from late June to early July. From the observation deck at the end of climbing the 1,445-step Sky Corridor, a grand panorama spreads out as if the highlands and the sky melt together. On blue-sky days the contrast of the yellow flower field and the blue of the sky is striking. A composition putting the flower field large in the foreground with a wide-angle lens and taking the sky broadly is especially popular.

Access: About 30 minutes by bus from JR and Tobu Nikko Station, get off right at "Kirifuri Kogen"

05 | Miyori Gorge (Nikko City)

The primeval gorge continuing along the Ojika River is breathtakingly beautiful in the fresh-greenery and autumn-leaf periods. With few people and a sense of being a hidden land, it is drawing attention as a "little-known photogenic spot." For the contrast of the clear stream and the greenery, using a polarizing filter (PL filter) makes the transparency of the water stand out even more. Shooting from a low angle right at the river surface, capturing the flowing water and autumn leaves at once, makes for a dramatic shot.

Access: About a 15-minute walk from "Ojikakogen Station" on the Yagan Railway

Tochigi's great nature shows completely different expressions in each season. Do come visit to find your own best shot.
