5 Photogenic Spectacular Spots in Tochigi

In Tochigi Prefecture, spectacular views that make you want to point your camera are hidden everywhere. Mountains, lakes, waterfalls, flower fields -- Tochigi, rich in the expressions of nature, is truly a treasure trove of the photogenic. This article covers Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, Ashikaga Flower Park, Kirifuri Highlands and Ojika River and the Miyori Area.

01 | Kegon Falls (Nikko City)

Kegon Falls (Kegon-no-taki), the most iconic waterfall in Oku-Nikko, plunges about 97 meters in a single breathtaking drop from the waters of Lake Chuzenji. Mist from the spray floats around the base, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. In autumn, the contrast between the surrounding foliage and the falls reaches its peak, and you can aim for a miraculous composition where orange, white, and blue gradations fill a single frame. The early morning hours bring light streaming in from the front, making the entire falls glitter — highly recommended. From the observation deck reached by elevator, a vertical composition with the falls centered delivers a shot of striking power.

Access: About 40 minutes by bus from JR/Tobu Nikko Station; get off at "Chuzenji Onsen" and walk about 5 minutes. The "Kegon Falls Elevator" that descends to the observation deck near the base is paid: adults ¥570, elementary school children ¥340 (preschoolers free). Open year-round 8:00–17:00; December–February 9:00–16:30 (subject to change by season and weather).

02 | Lake Chuzenji (Nikko City)

On clear days, the lake's surface spreads out with Mt. Nantai as its backdrop, reflecting the mountain as perfectly as a mirror — a paradise for reflection photography. Early mornings are especially calm, with the wind still and the upside-down Nantai perfectly formed. In the autumn foliage season, the lakeshore turns red and yellow, creating a scene that looks like a painting. As you stroll along the shore, try using the trees as a natural frame around your subject.

Access: About 45 minutes by bus from JR/Tobu Nikko Station; get off at "Chuzenji Onsen." At over 1,200 m above sea level, mornings and evenings are considerably colder than in the city below, so bring a layer even in summer. Driving to the lakeshore requires navigating the Iroha-zaka road with its series of sharp hairpin curves — expect heavy congestion during foliage season, and winter tires or chains are essential when the road freezes in winter.

03 | Ashikaga Flower Park (Ashikaga City)

The park's symbol — its enormous wisteria trellis — commands breathtaking attention. During the "Fuji no Hana Monogatari" (Wisteria Flower Festival) from mid-April to mid-May, wisterias bloom in succession in shades of pale pink, purple, white, and yellow, and the sight of them filling the sky overhead is truly a world apart. During this period, opening hours extend to 9:00–18:00, and on illumination evenings the park is open until 21:00. Shooting a vertical composition from inside the wisteria tunnel, with the flower arch receding into the distance, makes for a striking image. Visiting right at opening time in the morning, when crowds are still thin, is recommended. However, the wisteria peak season is extremely busy, so please be mindful not to stop in the middle of passageways and not to block traffic with a tripod.

Access: About 3 minutes on foot from JR Ryomo Line "Ashikaga Flower Park Station" (opened 2018; the nearest station before that was Tomita). Admission fees vary according to how fully the flowers are in bloom, so check the official website before you visit.

04 | Kirifuri Highlands (Nikko City)

The "Nikko City Kirifuri Highlands Kisuge-daira Garden," spreading across altitudes of 1,300–1,600 m, is a spectacular yellow carpet of day lilies that bloom in full force from late June to early July. Climbing the "Kuchu Kairo" (Sky Corridor) — 1,445 steps with a 240-meter elevation gain from the rest house to the Komaru-yama observation deck — rewards you on a clear day with views of Mt. Fuji, Tokyo Skytree, and even the Pacific Ocean. On a sunny day, the contrast between the yellow flower meadow and the blue sky is vivid and striking. A wide-angle shot with the flower field large in the foreground and plenty of sky above is particularly popular.

Access: About 30 minutes by bus from JR/Tobu Nikko Station; get off at "Kirifuri Kogen." The 1,445-step staircase offers little shade, so wear comfortable shoes and carry plenty of water. The Sky Corridor may close in winter due to snow and ice, so check the official website in advance.

05 | Ojika River and the Miyori Area (Nikko City)

The Miyori district along the Ojika River, which flows through the upper reaches of the Kinugawa basin, is breathtakingly beautiful during the fresh greenery and autumn foliage seasons. This area is also home to Miyori Keiryu Fishing Park, the only managed stream-fishing spot in Tochigi Prefecture (closed December 1 – March 20 in winter). With few visitors and a sense of remoteness, it has been drawing attention as a hidden Instagram-worthy destination. A polarizing filter (PL filter) enhances the transparency of the clear stream and greenery. Getting down to a low angle just above the water surface and capturing the flowing water alongside the autumn foliage makes for a dramatic shot.

Access: The nearest station is Yagan Railway Aizu-Kinugawa Line "Naka-Miyori Onsen Station" (about 30 minutes on foot to the fishing park; pick-up available with advance reservation). By car: about 60 minutes from Nikko-Utsunomiya Road "Imaichi IC," or about 40 minutes from Tohoku Expressway "Shiobara IC." Note: "Ojikakogen Station" is a remote station with no facilities nearby and is not a suitable starting point for sightseeing.

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: Kegon Falls is best in the morning, when the light comes from the front, and the autumn leaves usually peak in October. Reflections on Lake Chuzenji are best in the windless early morning. The wisteria at Ashikaga Flower Park is at its best from mid-April to mid-May. The nikko-kisuge day lilies of Kirifuri Highland bloom from late June to early July.
• Opening hours / event periods: The Kegon Falls elevator runs 8:00-17:00 year-round, and 9:00-16:30 from December to February (varies with the season and weather). Ashikaga Flower Park is normally open 10:00-17:00, extending to 9:00-18:00 during the "Wisteria Story" period and until 21:00 when illuminations are held. The Miyori mountain-stream fishing ground is closed for the winter from December 1 to March 20.
• Admission: The Kegon Falls elevator costs 570 yen for adults and 340 yen for elementary school children (free for preschool children). Admission to Ashikaga Flower Park varies according to how far the flowers have bloomed, so check the official website before visiting. Strolling along the shore of Lake Chuzenji and visiting the Kisugedaira Park of Kirifuri Highland are free of charge.
• Access: Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji = about 40-45 minutes by bus from JR / Tobu Nikko Station, get off at "Chuzenji Onsen." Kirifuri Highland = about 30 minutes by bus from the same stations, right by the "Kirifuri Kogen" stop. Ashikaga Flower Park = about a 3-minute walk from Ashikaga Flower Park Station on the JR Ryomo Line. The Ojika River and Miyori district = Naka-Miyori Onsen Station on the Yagan Railway Aizu Kinugawa Line; by car, about 60 minutes from the Imaichi IC on the Nikko-Utsunomiya Road or about 40 minutes from the Shiobara IC on the Tohoku Expressway.
• Parking: There are car parks around Kegon Falls, at the Kisugedaira Park of Kirifuri Highland and at Ashikaga Flower Park. They fill up easily during the wisteria season and Nikko's autumn foliage season, so arrive early.
• Photography rules: Ashikaga Flower Park is extremely crowded when the wisteria is at its best. Be considerate: do not linger too long on the paths, and do not block the way with a tripod. Within Nikko National Park, collecting plants and entering areas outside the designated zones are restricted. Do not fly drones without the permission of the site managers.
• Safety notes: The route to the shore of Lake Chuzenji goes over the "Irohazaka" slope with its succession of sharp hairpin bends. It is heavily congested during the autumn foliage season, and in winter winter tyres or chains are essential because the road freezes. The Tenku Kairo (Skywalk) staircase at Kirifuri Highland has 1,445 steps and a vertical rise of 240 m, so comfortable walking shoes and plenty of water are needed. It may be closed in winter due to snow and ice. Both Lake Chuzenji and Kirifuri Highland are at high elevation, so mornings and evenings are chilly even in summer.
