Ikuji Onsen: Day-Use Hot Spring Baths & Prices (Toyama)

Springing in the Ikuji district of Kurobe City, known as a town where pure water called shozu wells up, Ikuji Onsen is a quiet bathing spot surrounded by famous waters and the bounty of the fishing port. Its unpretentious hospitality and the rich water culture born of the Kurobe River alluvial fan give travelers a gentle welcome.

Access and Basic Information

The nearest station is Ikuji on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, a walk of about ten-odd minutes from the town. Neighboring Kurobe Station is also usable, and by car, access from the Kurobe Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway is convenient. The water is a sodium chloride type spring, carrying a salinity born of its closeness to the sea. The hot spring inns operating here today are limited, and some accept day-use bathing, so a soak to round off a town walk is recommended. Since some inns that once operated have already closed, checking the operating status in advance is reassuring if a drop-in bath is your aim.

Practical Travel Notes

A town walk takes about half a day to tour the famous-water spots at leisure. Uonoeki Ikuji, offering seafood and local products, is a handy stop for a rest, a meal, or souvenir hunting. Some spring points allow you to draw water freely, so bringing a small container is useful if you want to taste the famous water. Since there is little shade during the day, a hat and drinks are reassuring in summer. Combining the famous-water tour, the harbor food, and a soak still fits comfortably into a half-day-to-full-day walking course.

A Quick Tip

The scattered shozu spots are spread through the town, so deciding a route with a map in hand lets you tour them efficiently. Mornings at the fishing port are lively, so an early visit is best if you are after fresh seafood. As this is an area with few inns, arranging lodging or a drop-in bath early keeps your visit worry-free.

• Day-use bathing: Ikuji Onsen Tanakaya (230 Ikuji-Yoshidashin, Kurobe City / tel. 0765-56-8003) / 13:00 to 20:00 (last admission 19:00) / 800 yen for adults, 400 yen for children / there are closed days (check the day-use bathing calendar on the official website)
• Amenities and rentals: Shampoo, conditioner, body soap and hairdryers are all provided. Bath towels are 200 yen (for sale), large bath towels 200 yen (for hire), there are free lockers with keys, and there is a baby changing bed in the changing room. A book of 12 tickets is also sold for 8,000 yen
• Day-use meals: Day-use kaiseki courses including the bathing fee and use of a private room start from 9,900 yen for the standard kaiseki and 15,400 yen for the Kenshin kaiseki (1,100 yen extra at weekends and on public holidays). Reservation required
• About the water: Colourless, clear and salty water. On its official website Tanakaya states clearly that "it does not qualify as a hot spring as defined by the current Hot Spring Act, and we cannot state any legally recognised benefits" (a notice based on guidance from Toyama Prefecture). "Ikuji Onsen" is used as the establishment's trade name
• Access: About 5 minutes by car from Ikuji Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway / about 15 minutes by car from the Kurobe IC on the Hokuriku Expressway
• What needs to be reserved: Day-use kaiseki meals and overnight stays (additional dishes must be ordered up to 1 week before the date of stay)
• Strolling the town: The spring water sites of the Kurobe River alluvial fan spring group (one of Japan's 100 Best Waters), "Sakana no Eki Ikuji" fish market, Ikujibana Lighthouse and the swing-type movable bridge Ikuji Nakabashi are all within walking or cycling distance
