Standing alone on the shore of a deep dam lake in the Shogawa Gorge, Omaki Onsen has no road access and can only be reached by sightseeing boat. Its waters, tied to an old founding legend reaching back to the age of the Genpei wars, draw visitors into an extraordinary world within the stillness of surrounding mountains and water. Legend holds that Heike survivors who lost at the Battle of Kurikara Pass found the spring, placing its founding as far back as the late Heian period.

Highlights

After about thirty minutes aboard the Shogawa Gorge sightseeing boat from the Komaki pier, you arrive at the inn while gazing at the green of the gorge and the blue surface of the lake. The spring that once stood by the river sank beneath the lake when the Komaki Dam was completed in 1930, and the inn moved to the lakeside. From the lakeside open-air bath, the sheer slopes across the water rise close at hand. The inn uses an abundant sodium-calcium chloride and sulfate spring, letting you savor a soak on the quiet lakeshore.

Enjoying the Seasons

Fresh green in spring, coolness in summer, foliage in autumn, and snowscapes in winter change the gorge with every season. The view of the lakeside steeped in autumn color is especially exceptional, and many travelers come with this season in mind. The gorge scenery viewed from the boat also shows a different face each season.

Access and Basic Information

Boats depart from the Shogawa Gorge cruise pier at the Komaki embankment (Komaki Port) in Tonami City. The boat runs several times a day depending on the season, carrying guests of Omaki Onsen who board and disembark there. The trip is roughly thirty minutes one way. Besides overnight stays, plans bundled with the cruise are available, and the boat approach itself is a highlight of the trip. As a lone inn with no road access, a plan built around the boat schedule is essential.

Practical Travel Notes

Since you must move according to the boat schedule, always confirm your round-trip departures in advance. Service can change with the season and weather, so check the day conditions too. There are no shops around the inn, so gather anything you need before boarding for peace of mind. The Shogawa Onsen district by the pier, the woodcarving town of Inami, and Tonami Tulip Park are within driving range, pairing well with sightseeing before or after. In some seasons there are day plans to ride the boat and enjoy only the bath, so check to match your purpose.

A Quick Tip

Since you must move according to the boat schedule, confirm your round-trip departures in advance. There are no shops nearby, so gather anything you need before boarding for peace of mind. As the foliage season is especially popular, aim to arrange both the inn and the boat early.
