Shirahama Onsen โ€” One of Japan's Three Oldest Hot Springs

On a peninsula jutting into the warm waters of the Kumano Sea in southern Wakayama Prefecture, Shirahama Onsen has been a place of healing and relaxation since the 7th century. Listed in the Nihon Shoki, Japan's second oldest chronicle, as a resort visited by emperors of the ancient Yamato court, Shirahama is classified alongside Arima and Dogo as one of Japan's three oldest hot springs. Today it combines natural hot spring bathing, a spectacular white sand beach, dramatic coastal rock formations, and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

Highlights

Shirarahama Beach, the town's centrepiece, stretches for about 600 metres in a gentle curve of brilliant white sand โ€” rare in Japan, where most beaches are dark volcanic gravel. The sand is actually replenished from Australia every few years to maintain its distinctive colour. In summer the beach draws enormous crowds; in shoulder seasons it offers a pleasantly uncrowded seaside experience with warm water and Pacific sunshine.

The hot spring facilities at Shirahama range from large public bathhouses (soto-yu) to private ryokan baths overlooking the sea. Saki no Yu, carved directly into the rocks at the sea's edge, is the oldest bathhouse site in Shirahama โ€” bathing here, with waves occasionally breaking close by and sea air mixing with steam, is an experience of rare natural drama.

The coastal rock formations north of the town centre are Shirahama's geological spectacle: Sandanbeki Cliff, a 50-metre vertical rock face dropping directly into the sea, and Engetsu Island, a natural arch in a circular formation that frames perfectly circular views of the sea at sunset. Boat tours around the coastline reveal the formations from the water.

Adventure World, the world's most successful giant panda breeding facility outside China, is a major attraction for families visiting Shirahama.

Getting There & Tips

From Osaka, take the JR Kuroshio Limited Express to Shirahama Station (about 2 hours). Buses connect to the beach and hot spring areas. Book ryokan and popular public bath slots in advance for summer and autumn.

Best Time to Visit

Summer for beach swimming and outdoor baths. Autumn for quiet coastal walks and comfortable bathing. Winter for the most dramatic wave scenery at Sandanbeki. Spring brings mild temperatures and few crowds.
