Kuwanoki Falls: A Top-100 Waterfall Hidden in the Forests of Shingu, Wakayama

🌊 Wakayama|June 23, 2026

Kuwanoki Falls

Kuwanoki Falls in Shingu City, Wakayama, is a sheer waterfall about 21 meters high on a side valley of the Takada River, itself a tributary of the Kumano River. Chosen as one of Japans top 100 waterfalls, it appears after you cross a bridge over the river, pass in front of Aiga Hachiman Shrine, cross a suspension bridge over the clear stream, and walk about 20 minutes along a streamside path. Embraced by deep forest, the quiet plunge pool sees few visitors and is a healing, lesser-known spot full of natural energy.

Highlights

- The pure, sheer fall of about 21 meters dropping straight down the rock face - A forest suspension bridge along the way to the falls - A pleasant walking path wrapped in the murmur of the stream and dappled sunlight - A silent plunge pool full of fresh, misty air

Enjoying the Seasons

In the fresh greenery of early summer the forest is lush and the falls run full and invigorating. High summer is perfect for seeking cool relief, and in autumn the surrounding trees take on color. In winter you can listen to the quiet sound of the falls in clear air.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: Kumanogawa, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture - Access: By car from Shingu Station along the Kumano River, then about 20 minutes on foot from the trailhead - The path is an unpaved streamside trail; wear comfortable shoes and easy-to-move clothing - Beware of high water after rain; some spots are slippery underfoot

A Quick Tip

The path to the falls is a natural mountain trail. Come in trekking shoes, and do not push on when the water is high. The coolness at the falls is exceptional, making it an especially fine walk in summer.
