Iori-no-yu is a public bathhouse perched above the Futatsuno dam lake in Hiratani, Totsukawa, the southernmost village of Nara. In 2004 the Totsukawa hot spring district became the first place in Japan to declare that every bath would be pure free-flowing spring water, with no added hot water and no reheating, and here too the tubs brim with that living water. Standing right beside the bus center, it is a welcoming stop even for travelers without a car.

Highlights

The greatest draw is simply the free-flowing spring water that spills generously over the tubs. Its soft, gentle feel has earned it the nickname of a beauty bath, leaving the skin smooth after a soak. Inside there is a drinking fountain said to be the first of its kind in Nara, so you can taste the water and feel its minerals for yourself. A free footbath attached to the building lets you rest while gazing at the emerald green surface of the dam lake.

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring fresh greenery reflects on the lake and the valley air turns clear. Summer is perfect for rinsing off after river play or gorge walks, while autumn paints the surrounding mountains in red and gold, giving the view from the tub its finest moment of the year. In the quiet of a winter snowfall the warmth of the natural spring feels especially precious.

Access and Basic Information

The bath is in Hiratani, Totsukawa village, Yoshino district, Nara. It can be reached by local bus from Yamato-Yagi Station and sits just beside the Totsukawa Onsen bus center. By car, head south along National Route 168. Admission is around 600 yen for adults and about 300 yen for children. Hours generally run from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a regular Tuesday closure. The water is a sodium bicarbonate and chloride spring, and both the drinking fountain and the footbath are free to use. Days and hours can change with the season, so it is wise to confirm with the Totsukawa village tourism association before you visit.

Practical Travel Notes

Since it adjoins the bus center, it suits a car-free trip where you arrive after a ride on one of Japans longest local bus routes from Yamato-Yagi Station and bathe right away. The free footbath and drinking fountain can be enjoyed even by companions who are not bathing, so there is no trouble passing the wait. After Iori-no-yu you can also visit Tosenji Onsen and Kamiyu Onsen, so booking a night to relax and hop between baths is a fine plan. As a budget guide, a bath alone is an affordable 600 yen or so per person.

A Quick Tip

Totsukawa is deep in the mountains and travel takes time. After Iori-no-yu you can also visit Tosenji Onsen and Kamiyu Onsen, so booking a night to relax and hop between baths is a fine plan. Bringing your own towel keeps your luggage light.
