Totsukawa Onsen Iori-no-yu: Hot Spring Guide & Prices

Iori-no-yu is a public bathhouse perched above the Futatsuno dam lake in Hiratani, Totsukawa, the southernmost village of Nara. In 2004 the Totsukawa hot spring district became the first place in Japan to declare that every bath would be pure free-flowing spring water, with no added hot water and no reheating, and here too the tubs brim with that living water. Standing right beside the bus center, it is a welcoming stop even for travelers without a car.

By car, head south along National Route 168. Admission is around 600 yen for adults and about 300 yen for children. Hours generally run from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a regular Tuesday closure. The water is a sodium bicarbonate and chloride spring, and both the drinking fountain and the footbath are free to use. Since it adjoins the bus center, it suits a car-free trip where you arrive after a ride on one of Japans longest local bus routes from Yamato-Yagi Station and bathe right away.
