Dewa Sanzan and Mount Haguro Pilgrimage Course

This pilgrimage route walks Mount Haguro, the gateway to the Dewa Sanzan long revered as a sacred center of mountain worship. Following the cedar lined steps and the national treasure pagoda, you can experience a journey of rebirth.

Course Route

9:00 Start at the Zuishinmon Gate Pass through the vermillion Zuishinmon Gate at the foot of Mount Haguro and step into the sacred precinct.

9:20 Cross the Shinkyo and Haraigawa Descend Mamako Slope and cross the sacred bridge over the Haraigawa to purify body and mind. The Suga Falls can be seen nearby.

9:40 View the national treasure pagoda Reach the five story pagoda rising among the cedars. Its solemn form, with a history of about six hundred years, sharpens the spirit.

10:00 Climb the 2446 stone steps Ascend the First, Second, and Third Slopes, wrapped in cedar groves several centuries old.

11:30 Worship at the Sanshin Gosaiden At the summit, pray at the Sanshin Gosaiden, which enshrines the three mountains of Haguro, Gassan, and Yudono together.

12:30 Lunch and rest at the summit Enjoy vegetarian temple cuisine at the pilgrim lodge and linger in the afterglow of the journey.

Highlights

The cedar avenue and pagoda of Mount Haguro are important cultural properties, and the solemn approach path is a highlight. The Sanshin Gosaiden is a special hall where all three mountains can be worshipped at once, forming the heart of Dewa Sanzan faith.

Access and Tips

It is about forty minutes by bus from JR Tsuruoka Station to the Zuishinmon Gate. The stone steps take about an hour to climb, so comfortable shoes and some stamina are needed. A bus can also carry you to the summit.

A Quick Tip

The cedar avenue is mystical even in rain, but the steps become slippery, so take care. The sense of accomplishment on reaching the top is special, so walk slowly and take your time.
