Yonezawa Castle Town and Uesugi Legacy Course

This route explores Yonezawa, the castle town ruled by the Uesugi clan. Centered on Uesugi Shrine and the Yonezawa Castle ruins, you can enjoy sites tied to famous lords and the local Yonezawa beef in a single day.

Course Route

9:30 Start at Uesugi Shrine Visit Uesugi Shrine, built on the main keep site of Yonezawa Castle. Pray for a safe trip at this shrine dedicated to Uesugi Kenshin. From JR Yonezawa Station it is about 8 minutes by bus to the Uesugi Jinja Mae stop, or about 20 minutes on foot.

10:00 Walk Matsugasaki Park Stroll through Matsugasaki Park on the castle ruins, sensing the traces of the castle town in its moats and earthen walls. The grounds are free to walk.

10:30 Visit the Uesugi Museum At the museum inside the Denkoku no Mori complex next to Matsugasaki Park, learn about the history and culture of Yonezawa through treasures and records of the Uesugi family.

12:00 Lunch of Yonezawa beef Savor Yonezawa beef sukiyaki or steak at a noted restaurant in the town.

14:00 The Uesugi Mausoleum Head to the Uesugi Mausoleum where generations of lords rest. From the first lord Kagekatsu through the twelfth, the lords are buried here, and the tombs lined among the cedars give off a solemn air. It is within walking distance of Uesugi Shrine.

15:30 Walk the castle town streets Wander among former samurai residences and sake breweries, enjoying the calm streetscape of the castle town to close the day.

Access and Tips

It is about ten minutes by bus from JR Yonezawa Station to Uesugi Shrine. The main sites cluster within walking distance, so you can cover them efficiently on foot. Yonezawa beef restaurants are best aimed at lunch.

Practical Information for Your Visit

Assumptions for this course (time required and transport)

• Uesugi Shrine, Matsugasaki Park and Denkoku no Mori (Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum) stand next to one another, and these three alone can be covered in half a day. Adding the Uesugi Family Mausoleum and a walk through the castle town makes a full day.
• The main sights are clustered around Matsugasaki Park, so you get about mainly on foot. Only the Uesugi Family Mausoleum is a little away, so the city circular bus, a taxi or a car is convenient.

Opening hours and closing days of each facility

• Denkoku no Mori, Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum: Open 9:00-17:00 (last admission 16:30). Closed on the fourth Wednesday of each month from April to November, and every Monday from December to March (the first weekday after, when Monday is a holiday). Closed over the New Year period from December 27 to January 1. There are also occasional temporary closures and closures while displays are changed.
• Uesugi Family Mausoleum: Visiting hours are 9:00-17:00.
• The precincts of Uesugi Shrine and Matsugasaki Park are freely open for worship and strolling.

Guide to costs

• Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum, permanent exhibition: 410 yen for general visitors, 210 yen for high school and university students, 110 yen for elementary and junior high school students (for groups of 20 or more, 330 yen for general visitors, 150 yen for high school and university students, 60 yen for elementary and junior high school students).

• Free admission days: on May 5, "Children's Day," high school students and younger enter free; on May 18, "International Museum Day," and November 3, "Tohoku Culture Day," admission is free for everyone.
• Group rates apply on presentation of a JAF membership card or an SD card, and for elementary through university students holding a Yonezawa City Library user card. Holders of a disability certificate and one accompanying person pay half price.
• Uesugi Family Mausoleum: 400 yen for general visitors, 200 yen for high school and university students.
• Worship at Uesugi Shrine and strolling in Matsugasaki Park are free of charge.

Access

• To Uesugi Shrine and Denkoku no Mori: take the city circular bus from JR Yonezawa Station and get off at "Uesugi Jinja-mae," right at the site (about 8 minutes). It is also about a 20-minute walk.
• To the Uesugi Family Mausoleum: about 19 minutes from JR Yonezawa Station on the circular bus, get off at "Gobyosho Nishiguchi" and walk about 4 minutes. The address is 1-5-30 Gobyo, Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture.

Parking

• Uesugi Family Mausoleum: 30 spaces for ordinary cars and 3 for buses, free of charge.
• Denkoku no Mori also has a car park, but it may be unavailable on the days of major events such as the Yonezawa Uesugi Festival (late April to early May), the Uesugi Snow Lantern Festival (mid-February) and the Nasebanaru Autumn Festival (end of September). In that case, use nearby car parks such as the "Omatsuri Hiroba car park."

What needs to be reserved

• Groups of 10 or more visiting the Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum must make a group reservation in advance.
• Popular Yonezawa beef restaurants get busy at lunchtime. Where a restaurant takes bookings, reserving ahead is the safe option.

Cautions and safety notes

• The museum may also close while displays are being changed. If you visit outside the dates of a feature exhibition, only the permanent exhibition is open and the permanent-exhibition price applies.
• The Uesugi Family Mausoleum is a burial ground. Pay your respects quietly and be mindful of photography etiquette.
• Yonezawa gets a lot of snow. In winter, bring warm clothing and non-slip shoes, and watch out for icy road surfaces.
