Dewa Sanzan โ The Sacred Mountains of Rebirth and Ascetic Training
In the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture, three peaks โ Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan, and Mt. Yudono โ collectively known as Dewa Sanzan (Three Mountains of Dewa) have been the center of Shugendo mountain asceticism and the unique Shinto-Buddhist tradition of Dewasanzan worship for over 1,400 years. Pilgrims who complete the circuit of all three mountains are symbolically "reborn" โ death represented by Haguro, the afterlife by Gassan, and rebirth by Yudono. The mountains remain active pilgrimage sites where yamabushi (mountain ascetics) practice ancient rites of purification and spiritual transformation.
Highlights
Mt. Haguro (414 meters) is the most accessible and culturally richest. The approach climbs 2,446 stone steps through a towering cryptomeria cedar forest โ some trees over 500 years old โ past a beloved three-story pagoda (National Treasure) before reaching the mountaintop shrine complex. The pagoda, dating to the early Heian period, stands in a forest glade of extraordinary atmosphere.
Mt. Gassan (1,984 meters) is a high alpine peak accessed by a trail that traverses snowfields in July and wildflower meadows in August. The summit shrine is staffed by priests who conduct purification rituals for all pilgrims. Mt. Yudono, the most sacred, cannot be photographed โ visitors remove shoes and walk barefoot over warm, mineral-encrusted volcanic rock in a rite of intense spiritual significance.
Yamagata's unique sokushinbutsu (self-mummified Buddhist monks) are associated with Dewa Sanzan โ several remarkable examples can be viewed at local temples.
