Kumano Taisha, a Matchmaking Shrine of Three Hidden Rabbits in Nanyo, Yamagata
Kumano Taisha
Standing in Nanyo in Yamagata, Kumano Taisha is a storied ancient shrine sometimes called the Ise of Tohoku. Together with the three Kumano shrines of Wakayama and the Kumano Kotai Jingu of Nagano, it is counted as one of the three great Kumano shrines of Japan, and it is said to have been restored in the year 806 by imperial order of Emperor Heizei. Its enshrined deities are Izanagi and Izanami. As the first married couple of gods joined in Japanese myth, the shrine is beloved as a leading matchmaking power spot of Tohoku.
