Mifuchi Keikoku, a Secret Dragon Gorge Reached Only by Boat in Nagai, Yamagata
Mifuchi Keikoku
Upstream along the Nogawa river that flows through Nagai in Yamagata, deep within the Hyakushuko lake formed by the Nagai dam, lies a hidden gorge called Mifuchi Keikoku. The river is only 3 to 5 meters wide, and on both banks sheer cliffs over 50 meters high run for about 250 meters. Because it is so narrow, today it can only be reached by boat. Since long ago people have believed that a dragon god dwells in Mifuchi, and it was a sacred place where many mountain ascetics gathered. The otherworldly scenery that appears as you drift forward by boat is its true charm.
