๐Ÿ’ Yamagata|July 3, 2026

Akayu Onsen

In the city of Nanyo, Akayu Onsen is an old spring said to have healed a warrior's wounds some 900 years ago. Its name is thought to come from the water overflowing and staining the ground red, and it has long ranked among the finest spas of the Okitama region.

Highlights

Several public bathhouses are scattered about, where you can enjoy the hot water alongside locals. The surroundings are wine country dense with vineyards, and stays paired with winery visits are popular.

Enjoying the Seasons

From summer into autumn, grape picking and freshly pressed new wine can be enjoyed. In spring the cherry trees of Eboshiyama Park burst into bloom, drawing crowds of blossom viewers.

Access and Basic Information

A few minutes by bus or taxi from JR Akayu Station. The water is a sulfur-bearing sodium-chloride spring with plentiful flow.

A Quick Tip

The public baths are often quite hot, so pour water over yourself to acclimate before stepping in.
