Kaminoyama Onsen A Castle Town Dotted with Footbaths

๐Ÿ’ Yamagata|July 3, 2026

Kaminoyama Onsen

Spreading through the castle town of Kaminoyama, this historic spa is said to have been discovered about 560 years ago. Counted among the three renowned spa villages of old Oshu, its inns gather chiefly in the Tsukioka district.

Highlights

Free footbaths are set up here and there around town, easy to drop into between strolls. Kaminoyama Castle, perched on a low hill, offers fine views, including a lovely outlook toward the Zao mountain range.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring brings cherry blossoms to the castle grounds, while autumn offers the local Kaminoyama wine and grapes. In winter it takes on a quiet charm as a spa for snow viewing.

Access and Basic Information

About a 10-minute walk from JR Kaminoyama-Onsen Station. The water is a sodium-calcium chloride spring that warms the body well.

A Quick Tip

A footbath tour map is available at the tourist information center, so it is worth stopping there first to pick one up.
