Tama Konnyaku

🍒 Yamagata|July 2, 2026

Tama Konnyaku

Round balls of konjac simmered in a soy based broth, tama konnyaku is a soul food for the people of Yamagata.

Highlights

The spherical konjac is slowly simmered in a sweet and savory broth, then skewered and eaten. Its springy, distinctive bounce and the savory broth soaked deep inside are addictive. Adding a dab of mustard for a spicy kick is the classic way to enjoy it.

Enjoying the Seasons

Along the Yamadera approach and at sightseeing stalls, steaming pots of tama konnyaku are a specialty. A warm skewer heats you up in the cold season, and it is a popular walking snack during travel season.

Access and Basic Information

From Yamadera Station on the JR Senzan Line, head to the temple approach. It is also sold at festivals, roadside stations, and supermarkets across the prefecture.

A Quick Tip

Low in calories and light, it is perfect for a small snack. Be careful of burns when eating it piping hot, and add mustard to taste.
