Karamatsu Kannon

In the Takarazawa area of Yamagata City stands Karamatsu Kannon, an old temple known for a cliffside hall modeled on Kiyomizu dera in Kyoto. Loved as the fifth temple of the Mogami thirty three Kannon pilgrimage, it carries a beautiful love tale at its origin. It is said that Princess Toyomaru of Kyoto, guided by a message from Kannon, visited this land and was joined in marriage with a charcoal maker named Toda. Grateful that their happiness was thanks to the Kannon, she enshrined the personal image she had brought in a rock cave on Mount Karamatsu, and this was the beginning. As a matchmaking Kannon, it still draws many visitors today.

In spring fresh greenery covers the rock face and the hall stands out amid the green. In summer the murmur of the river and the cool breeze feel pleasant, and in autumn the foliage colors the hall vividly, the most popular season. In winter the snow covered hall shows a dreamlike form. There is a riverside campground nearby, so you can enjoy a visit that feels at one with nature.

- By bus from JR Yamagata Station, get off at Karamatsu Kannon, then about a 10 minute walk - Parking at the foot of the Karamatsu bridge - Free to visit - Being in a valley, evenings can grow chilly

A Quick Tip

The autumn foliage season is especially recommended. The cliffside hall is wonderful for photos, so try viewing the whole scene from the opposite bank across the river.
