01 | Hagi Castle Town (Hagi City)

The castle town of Hagi unfolds like a scene leaping out of a picture book, woven from white plaster walls and natsumikan (summer oranges). The cobblestone paths running along the earthen walls feel like a time slip back to the Edo period. Late autumn to winter, when the yellow natsumikan ripen, makes for an especially picturesque scene. Shooting down the alley where walls and lanes continue into the distance creates a photo with depth. The soft morning light reflects off the white walls, finishing the photo with a bright, clean feel.

Access: About 15 minutes on foot from JR Higashi-Hagi Station

02 | Former Yamaguchi Domain Office Gate (Yamaguchi City)

A weighty gate that quietly stands within the grounds of the Yamaguchi Prefectural Office, retaining the air of the late Edo period. The contrast between the deep tones of the wood and the moss-covered stonework radiates an overwhelming presence. In the fresh greenery of spring or the autumn foliage, the background takes on color, making the photo look like a painting. Shooting from a low angle, looking up at the gate from the front, conveys the weight of history directly.

Access: About 5 minutes by bus from JR Yamaguchi Station, get off right at Kencho-mae

03 | Former Hagi Domain School Meirinkan (Hagi City)

A magnificent gleaming-white building that remains on the site of one of Japan's largest domain schools. Its symmetrical exterior is beautiful, and a composition that captures the building symmetrically left and right is the surefire approach. On cloudy days, the sky turns white, so the whiteness of the building stands out, creating a more dramatic atmosphere. We recommend taking a wide shot of the whole structure, making use of the broad space in front. Placing a person in the foreground also conveys the sense of scale.

Access: About 5 minutes by car from JR Higashi-Hagi Station

04 | Tsunoshima Bridge and Lighthouse (Shimonoseki City)

The combination of the 1,780m-long bridge stretching over the emerald-green sea and the gleaming-white lighthouse is one of Yamaguchi's signature Instagrammable spots. On a sunny summer morning, the sea's transparency reaches its peak, and the blues of the bridge and sky shine vividly. Capturing the whole bridge in an S-curve from the observation deck is the classic angle. Shooting the lighthouse looking up against a blue sky background makes for a refreshing, clean photo.

Access: About 30 minutes by bus from JR Ogushi Station

05 | Motonosumi Shrine (Nagato City)

A spectacular spot you can see only here, where 123 red torii gates line a cliff overlooking the Sea of Japan. The contrast with the blue sea spreading out beyond the tunnel of torii gates is breathtaking. In the early morning when the sunrise streams in, the torii glow golden, creating a fantastical atmosphere. Shooting as if peering down the row of torii into the distance creates a sense of depth that seems to continue infinitely.

Access: About 20 minutes by taxi from JR Nagato-Furuichi Station

Practical Information for Your Visit

• Best season and time of day: For the Hagi castle town, mornings from late autumn to winter, when the natsumikan citrus are in fruit. For Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge, a sunny summer morning. Motonosumi Shrine can only be visited during its daytime worship hours.
• Opening hours / closing days: The worship hours of Motonosumi Shrine changed to 9:30-16:30 from August 1, 2025. You cannot enter the precincts in the early morning or after sunset. Hagi Meirin Gakusha is open 9:00-21:00 in the Main Building (exhibition rooms until 17:00), 9:00-17:00 in Building 2, 9:00-18:00 in Building 3 and 9:00-21:00 in Building 4; it is closed on the first Tuesday of February and the following day (Buildings 3 and 4 are also closed from December 29 to January 3). The individual facilities in the Hagi castle town and Tsunoshima Lighthouse each have their own opening hours.
• Admission: At Hagi Meirin Gakusha the Main Building is free of charge and Building 2 costs 300 yen. Worship at Motonosumi Shrine is free, but the parking is paid: 300 yen per hour for an ordinary car, plus 100 yen for each additional hour up to a maximum of 500 yen (100 yen per hour for mopeds and motorcycles). The individual facilities in the Hagi castle town such as the Kikuya Residence, and climbing Tsunoshima Lighthouse, all charge admission.
• Access: The Hagi castle town is about a 20-minute walk from JR Higashi-Hagi Station. The Former Yamaguchi Domain Government Office Gate is right by the "Kencho-mae" bus stop, about 5 minutes by bus from JR Yamaguchi Station. Hagi Meirin Gakusha is about 5 minutes by taxi from JR Higashi-Hagi Station (602 Emukai, Hagi City, in front of Hagi City Hall). For Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge, take a bus about 10-15 minutes from JR Kottoi Station, get off at "Hotel Nishinagato Resort Iriguchi" and walk about 3 minutes to the Amagase Park viewpoint. Motonosumi Shrine is about 20 minutes by taxi from JR Nagato-Furuichi Station.
• Parking: Hagi Meirin Gakusha has space for about 180 ordinary cars at 310 yen per day, and 10 buses at 1,050 yen per day. Motonosumi Shrine has about 116 paid spaces across its Parking Lots No. 1 and No. 2. To photograph Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge, please use viewpoint parking areas such as Amagase Park.
• Photography etiquette: The Former Yamaguchi Domain Government Office Gate stands on the grounds of the Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Office, so please take care not to disturb official business. The Hagi castle town is still a place where people live their daily lives; do not step onto the earthen walls or private property. At Motonosumi Shrine, please be careful not to block the way of other worshippers.
• Safety notes: Stopping or parking on Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge is prohibited. Always take your photographs from the viewpoint parking areas. Motonosumi Shrine sits along a cliff facing the Sea of Japan, with unfenced sections and steep stone steps. It is especially dangerous in strong winds or rain, so do not go too close to the sea side.
