Perched on a hilltop in Yamanashi City, Hottarakashi Onsen is a day-use spa known for its unpretentious, wide-open outdoor baths. The panorama of the Kofu Basin below and Mount Fuji beyond is stunning, and many people arrive before dawn to soak as the sun rises.

Highlights

The greatest attraction is the vast, unobstructed panorama from the open-air baths. Two separate pools, known locally as the far bath and the near bath, each offer the view from a slightly different angle. While the original near bath faces Fuji head on, the later-built far bath is more spacious and prized for its sweep of the Kofu Basin night view and the morning sun. After dark, the lights of the basin and a sky full of stars spread out before you.

Enjoying the Seasons

The celebrated sunrise can be enjoyed year round, and in the clear air of winter Mount Fuji looks especially beautiful. Summer invites cool evening bathing on the breezy heights, while spring and autumn pair well with the surrounding orchards. Sunrise times shift greatly by season, so adjusting your arrival to the time of year lets you catch the moving spectacle of dawn.

Access and Basic Information

The spa sits atop a hill reached by a winding road from Yamanashi City Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, and a taxi is convenient for those without a car. By car, it is accessed from the Katsunuma and Ichinomiya Misaka interchanges on the Chuo Expressway. Of the two baths, the far bath opens roughly an hour before sunrise and stays open into the evening, with its opening time shifting through the seasons to match the sunrise. The near bath generally runs from morning into the afternoon, and into the evening on weekends. Each bath has its own fee, and adult admission is reasonable, starting from a few hundred yen.

Practical Travel Notes

  • The two baths have separate fees and entrances, so pick the one that matches the view you want. For sunrise, the far bath is the sure choice.
  • Stalls on the grounds serve hot-spring eggs and light snacks, a favorite treat after a soak.
  • Public transport to the hilltop is limited, so combining a taxi or rental car is the practical option.
  • Early mornings can be chilly in any season, so bring a layer to throw on for peace of mind.
  • On busy holidays and around sunrise the parking fills quickly, so arriving early is recommended.

A Quick Tip

If you are after the sunrise, rise early and aim to arrive a little before dawn. Mornings can be chilly, so bring a jacket, and on busy holidays leave extra time for the trip. Look up the sunrise time for your travel dates and check it against the opening hours to be sure of catching the view you came for.
