Stretching along the Shimobegawa in the mountains of Minobu Town, Shimobe Onsen is a historic spa long remembered as a secret bathing spot of the warring-states general Takeda Shingen. The old-fashioned custom of easing slowly into its mild, lukewarm water for a lengthy cure still lives on quietly here. Soldiers wounded at the Battle of Kawanakajima are said to have recovered in this water, and it has long been known as a fine spring for healing injuries.

Highlights

The calm hot spring street, filled with the murmur of the mountain stream, is perfect for resting body and mind away from the bustle. There is the lukewarm old spring and a hotter source that welled up later, so you can enjoy different waters depending on the inn. A short trip beyond takes you to Kuonji, the grand head temple of the Nichiren sect on Mount Minobu.

Enjoying the Seasons

Spring invites strolls along the river amid fresh greenery, summer offers a cool refuge, and autumn dyes the surrounding peaks in red and gold. Winter is quiet and lightly visited, well suited to anyone who wants to savor the mood of an old healing retreat. The weeping cherry trees of Mount Minobu are a famed spring sight, and many people pair them with the spa.

Access and Basic Information

The spa lies close to Shimobe Onsen Station on the JR Minobu Line, where limited express trains also stop, making for an easy and leisurely arrival by train. The station is a short distance from the spa street, and by car the Shimobe Onsen Hayakawa interchange on the Chubu Odan Expressway is nearest, convenient for combining with a visit to Mount Minobu. The lukewarm old spring is mainly an alkaline simple spring, well suited to warming the body slowly over a long soak. Some inns accept day-use bathing, but hours and closed days vary by inn, so confirming ahead is safest.

Practical Travel Notes

  • The limited express Fujikawa stops at Shimobe Onsen Station, making it easy to reach by train from both the Kofu and Shizuoka directions.
  • Since the style is warming slowly in lukewarm water, an overnight stay with time to spare is recommended.
  • Day-use availability and hours differ by inn, so confirming in advance is reassuring.
  • Kuonji on Mount Minobu is easy to reach by car from the station, allowing an itinerary that combines a temple visit with the spa.
  • In the quiet riverside setting the nights turn chilly, so a jacket is welcome depending on the season.

A Quick Tip

The mild water shows its worth only with a long, slow soak. Allow plenty of time and stay a night, letting the sound of the river carry you into deep relaxation. If you come by train, a visit to Kuonji on Mount Minobu and the views of Mount Fuji from the Minobu Line make fine additions to the memories of your trip.
