Nagoya Basho

Grand Sumo in Summer

Grand sumo holds six official tournaments per year, with the Nagoya Basho in July. Dolphins Arena (Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium) in Naka Ward hosts what is the largest of the regional tournaments.

The Appeal of Watching

Watching from the sand-level tamari seats is thrilling. Box seats and chair seats are also enjoyable, with advance ticket reservation essential though day-of tickets are also sold.

Sumo Wrestlers' Lodgings

During the Nagoya Basho, wrestlers stay at temporary stables (lodgings) throughout the city. Near these lodgings, fans have chances to see wrestlers up close, with popular morning chanko nabe observation visits.

Nagoya Sumo Gourmet

From chanko nabe to other dishes, sumo-themed food can be enjoyed around the venue. Box seat bento limited to the Nagoya Basho and tours of restaurants favored by wrestlers are highlights of the experience.
