Koshio Shrine

Koshio Shrine in Akita City is a storied old shrine set near the ruins of Akita Castle. According to shrine tradition, it began when Obiko-no-Mikoto, sent to the northern coast as one of the four generals in the age of Emperor Sujin, enshrined a martial deity as a guardian of the north. Later, when Abe-no-Hirafu visited the land of Akita, he is said to have enshrined his own ancestor alongside, founding it as Koshio Shrine. Long regarded as the guardian of Akita Castle, it is a shrine that tells the history of the region.
