Tamagawa Onsen (Semboku) | Japans Strongest Acidic Spring and a Healing Retreat
Tamagawa Onsen
Springing from the mountains of Hachimantai, Tamagawa Onsen is one of Japans most acidic springs at around pH 1.2. Its single source pours out about 9,000 liters per minute, the largest such flow in the country, and it has long drawn healing guests from across Japan.
Highlights
From the Obuke source, scalding water erupts with a roar amid the scent of sulfur and rising steam. The signature natural rock bath channels heat straight from the ground, and the sight of guests lying on mats is unique to Tamagawa. A walking path also lets you see hokutolite, a mineral that emits trace radiation.Enjoying the Seasons
From lingering spring snow to fresh greenery and autumn foliage, the high-mountain seasons unfold here. In winter some facilities close due to heavy snow, so check ahead.Access and Basic Information
About 70 minutes by bus from JR Tazawako Station. Driving in from the Hachimantai Aspite Line is also popular.A Quick Tip
Because the water is strongly acidic, start with short soaks. Use the rock baths according to your condition and keep hydrated.📍 Location & Access
