Goshogake Onsen (Kazuno) | Steam Boxes and Ondol at a Geothermal Retreat

🍶 Akita|July 3, 2026

Goshogake Onsen

Midway up Hachimantai, in a geothermal field where steam rises from the earth, sits Goshogake Onsen. So renowned for its healing effects that an old saying claims visitors arrive on horseback and leave on foot, it still preserves a living culture of therapeutic bathing.

Highlights

The signature bath is the box-steam bath, where you sit in a wooden box with only your head exposed. There are seven kinds of baths, including a geothermal mud bath, a pounding waterfall bath, and ondol floors heated from below. Nearby, the Goshogake nature trail winds past mud volcanoes and steam vents, letting you feel the breath of the land up close.

Enjoying the Seasons

Early summer greenery and autumn foliage make it perfect for a drive, as geothermal steam blends beautifully with mountain colors.

Access and Basic Information

Reached by bus from JR Tazawako Station or JR Kazuno-Hanawa Station. Sitting along the Hachimantai Aspite Line, it is convenient by car.

A Quick Tip

The steam box is demanding, so do not overdo it. On the nature trail, beware of hydrogen sulfide and follow the posted signs.
