Midway up Hachimantai, in a geothermal field where steam rises from the earth, sits Goshogake Onsen. So renowned for its healing effects that an old saying claims visitors arrive on horseback and leave on foot, it still preserves a living culture of therapeutic bathing.

The signature bath is the box-steam bath, where you sit in a wooden box with only your head exposed. There are seven kinds of baths, including a geothermal mud bath, a pounding waterfall bath, and ondol floors heated from below.
