Surrounded by the deep primeval beech forest of Towada, Tsuta Onsen is a hidden hot spring where a single quiet inn stands alone. Its water wells up from the very floor of the bath, a rare style found in few places nationwide, letting you enjoy remarkably fresh spring water to your heart content. It is a tranquil inn beloved even by travel writers.

Highlights

The charm lies in the atmospheric wooden bathhouse and the clear, gentle water. Around the inn, walking paths lead through a series of ponds, including Tsutanuma, where you can stroll through nature and bathe in the forest air.

Enjoying the Seasons

The autumn foliage at Tsutanuma is so stunning that visitors come from across the country, and the colors mirrored on the water are breathtaking. Winter brings snow-wrapped silence, and early summer dazzles with fresh green, each season showing a different face.

Access and Basic Information

From Aomori City, it is about ninety minutes by car along the road toward Lake Towada. Bus access is possible but infrequent, so checking timetables in advance brings peace of mind. The spring is described as a sodium and calcium sulfate, bicarbonate and chloride water, colorless and clear as it wells up from the floor. Day-use bathing is accepted, with reception ending early, by around the early afternoon.

Practical Travel Notes

Day-use reception often ends in the early afternoon, so for a drop-in visit, coming from late morning to midday is recommended. The floor-welling water is prized for the freshness of spring water rising directly, so take your time to savor its scent and feel on the skin. A walking path reaches Tsutanuma in a few minutes, and the Oirase Gorge is also within a short drive. During foliage season the surrounding roads and parking grow very crowded, so consider an early arrival or using public transport.

A Quick Tip

Tsutanuma grows very crowded during foliage season, so an early morning visit is recommended. Staying overnight lets you have the evening quiet and the crisp morning bath all to yourself. As this is precious floor-welling water, rinse first, then soak quietly and fully enjoy the freshness of the spring.

Practical Information for Your Visit

  • Benefits: Neuralgia, rheumatism, functional impairment
