Owani Onsen

Located at the southern edge of the Tsugaru Plain, Owani Onsen is an ancient spring with eight hundred years of history. It is said that lords of the Tsugaru domain once came here for cures, and old communal bathhouses still remain scattered throughout the town. The local specialty, bean sprouts grown using the heat of the springs, is a flavor unique to this place.

Highlights

The special way to enjoy Owani is to make the rounds of the communal bathhouses dotted through town. Soaking in the baths that locals visit daily lets you touch the simple, warm life of Tsugaru. Wandering the alleys of the historic hot spring town is full of charm as well.

Enjoying the Seasons

In winter, a ski slope is nearby, and a soak after playing in the snow is exceptional. Spring brings cherry blossoms, and summer offers the lush scenery of green countryside. The hot spring bean sprouts, available all year, are a superb ingredient when added to hot pot.

Access and Basic Information

The nearest stations are Owani Onsen on the JR Ou Line or Owani on the Konan Railway. Close to Hirosaki City and convenient by rail, it is easy to drop by.

A Quick Tip

Some communal baths run rather hot, so rinse yourself lightly before entering to let your body adjust. Be sure to try the famous bean sprouts as a souvenir or in a meal.
