Sukayu Onsen
Nestled deep in the forests of Mount Hakkoda, Sukayu Onsen is a healing retreat with more than three centuries of history. Its grand bathhouse, built entirely from hinoki cypress and known as the Thousand-Person Bath, has drawn visitors for generations with its sheer scale and rising steam. The cloudy, milky sulfur water gently eases away the fatigue of travel.
Highlights
The greatest spectacle is the Thousand-Person Bath itself. In this vast, pillar-free hall, several springs bubble up, each with its own temperature and reputed benefits. Wrapped in the warmth of wood and the scent of sulfur, visitors can experience the old tradition of mixed bathing, a rare treat.
Enjoying the Seasons
In summer, a soak after hiking the Hakkoda highlands is unforgettable. Autumn brings brilliant foliage, while winter, in one of Japan snowiest regions, blankets everything in deep white. Bathing amid falling snow feels almost dreamlike and is well worth the trip.
Access and Basic Information
From central Aomori City, it is about an hour by car along National Route 103 toward Hakkoda. Heavy snowfall in winter means you should allow extra time. Day-use bathing is also welcome.
A Quick Tip
Sulfur water is gentle on the skin but rich in minerals, so drink plenty of water afterward. For those who prefer not to bathe with others, women-only hours are also provided.
