Mt. Hakkoda: Spectacular Rime Ice and Vast Wilderness of Tohoku's Sacred Peak

Mt. Hakkoda, Aomori's Famous Peak

Mt. Hakkoda refers to the mountains in the southern part of Aomori City; it is not a single peak but a collective name for several volcanoes. The highest is Odake, at an elevation of 1,584 metres. It consists of the ranges known as North Hakkoda and South Hakkoda, spreading out in varied terrain created by volcanic activity. Known as one of Japan's heaviest snowfall regions, it is covered in vast quantities of snow in winter. Blessed with rich nature, it is a peak representative of Aomori, offering a wide variety of enjoyment through the seasons: mountaineering and trekking, hot springs, and the rime ice of winter.

The Spectacle of Winter Rime Ice

What symbolises winter on Mt. Hakkoda is the fantastical "juhyo" (rime ice). In midwinter, ice and snow are blown against the conifers and freeze there, transforming whole trees into huge white masses of snow. The sight of these forms, also called "snow monsters," standing in countless numbers across the snowfield is truly overwhelming. Riding the Hakkoda Ropeway up to the Summit Park Station lets you enjoy the spectacle of the rime-ice field spreading out all around you at close range. Under a clear blue sky, the beauty of the rime ice shining in the sun is a work of natural art that can only be seen here, in this cold season.

Beech Forest and Alpine Plants

The appeal of Mt. Hakkoda is not limited to winter. From spring to autumn, its rich nature welcomes climbers and hikers. The magnificent virgin beech forest spreading across the mountain's lower slopes is especially beautiful in the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn colour, and trekking while enjoying a forest bath is exceptional. Boardwalks are laid out across the marshes, where delicate alpine plants bloom in profusion in summer. The mountains reflected in the marsh pools and the landscape coloured by seasonal flowers soothe the hearts of visitors. It is a mountain where you can encounter a wide variety of natural beauty throughout the year.

Best Season and Access

According to the Aomori Prefecture tourism information site, the rime ice is usually at its best in January and February (some guidance gives the period as January to early March). Fresh greenery is best in early summer and autumn colours in autumn. For access, take the JR Bus Tohoku "Mizuumi-go" from JR Aomori Station, about 1 hour, and get off at "Ropeway Ekimae." By car it is about 50 minutes from JR Aomori Station and about 40 minutes from Aomori Airport. Noted hot springs such as Sukayu Onsen are also dotted around the mountain. However, Mt. Hakkoda is an active volcano at Eruption Warning Level 1, and fumaroles and volcanic gas emissions can be seen around Jigokunuma and elsewhere. Fatal accidents caused by volcanic gas (hydrogen sulphide) have occurred in the past, so do not enter areas with entry restrictions or hollows in the ground, and if you notice a strong irritating smell, do not remain in that spot.

Practical Information

• Best season: According to the Aomori Prefecture tourism information site "Amazing AOMORI," the rime ice is usually at its best in January and February. On the other hand, some tourism resource commentary states that "January to early March is the best time," so there is some range in the timing. Fresh greenery is best in early summer and autumn colours in autumn.
• Fees: Standard Hakkoda Ropeway tickets cost 1,400 yen one way / 2,200 yen return for adults (junior high school age and above), and 450 yen one way / 700 yen return for children (elementary school age); free for children below school age.
• Operating hours: The Hakkoda Ropeway runs 9:00-16:20 from March to early November, and 9:00-15:40 from mid-November to February. Departures are every 15-20 minutes and the ride takes about 10 minutes. In addition to a suspension of service for machinery maintenance and inspection in early November each year, it does not run in wind speeds of 25 m/s or more or in severe weather.
• Access: About 1 hour from JR Aomori Station on the JR Bus Tohoku "Mizuumi-go," getting off at "Ropeway Ekimae." By car, about 50 minutes from JR Aomori Station, about 40 minutes from Aomori Airport, and about 65 minutes from JR Hirosaki Station.
• Parking: About 350 spaces at the Hakkoda Ropeway base station.
• Clothing and equipment: In midwinter, waterproof and windproof outerwear, a balaclava, goggles, and midwinter gloves and mountaineering boots are essential. Whiteouts in which visibility is lost occur easily on the mountain in winter, and if you leave the marked course on the rime-ice field you will lose your sense of direction. If you go into the backcountry, take avalanche equipment such as a transceiver, probe and shovel, and go with a guide.

*[Most important safety information] Mt. Hakkoda is an active volcano for which the Japan Meteorological Agency continues to issue "Eruption Warning Level 1 (be aware that this is an active volcano)." Fumaroles and volcanic gas emissions can be seen around Jigokunuma and elsewhere. On June 20, 2010, near the mountain trail at Sukayu-zawa, Arakawa, Aomori City, a group who had entered the mountain to gather bamboo shoots suffered an accident caused by volcanic gas (hydrogen sulphide), resulting in deaths (a fatal accident also occurred in 1997). The concentration of volcanic gas changes with wind speed and terrain, and can become locally very high under conditions such as in hollows or when there is no wind. If you notice a strong irritating smell, do not remain in that spot but move away quickly. High concentrations of hydrogen sulphide can paralyse the sense of smell so that you can no longer detect the odour. Never enter areas with entry restrictions, and follow the instructions of the local authorities and others.* *Sukayu at the foot of Mt.
