Matsuyama Castle

When spring transforms the castle town of Matsuyama — the largest on Shikoku island — into a sea of cherry blossoms, it becomes one of Japan's most spectacular sights. Matsuyama Castle, perching atop Mount Katsuyama at 132 meters elevation, is celebrated as one of Japan's twelve surviving original castle towers (gensun jushiro). During cherry blossom season, the pale pink blossoms soften the imposing stone walls with a delicate beauty that literally takes your breath away. Best Season

The typical peak is late March to mid-April. Around 200 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees ring the castle grounds, and the approach path lined with cherry blossoms framing the castle is a scene of exceptional beauty. Night illuminations during the peak blossom period transform the castle into something almost otherworldly.

Access

From Matsuyama City center, a 5-minute streetcar ride to the Okaido stop, then walk approximately 5 minutes to the ropeway/lift station at the foot of the castle hill. The ropeway or chairlift takes you up the mountain in a few minutes. You can also climb on foot via the walking trail (approximately 20 minutes).

Uchiko Town

Uchiko is a historic merchant town in the interior of Ehime Prefecture that preserves a beautifully intact streetscape of Edo and Meiji-period buildings. The main Yokaichi Gokoku district, with its white-walled storehouses and latticed merchant houses, evokes a Japan that has largely disappeared elsewhere — and in cherry blossom season, this atmosphere deepens further as the old streets are softened by falling petals.

The Uchiko-za, a traditional kabuki theater from 1916, is one of Uchiko's most famous attractions and a symbol of the town's cultural heritage. The combination of historic architecture, local crafts (Uchiko is famous for its traditional wax production), and spring blossoms makes a visit to Uchiko feel like stepping back through time.

Late March to early April for cherry blossoms. The surrounding hills and the banks of the Oda River are also lovely in spring.

From Matsuyama, take the JR Yosan Line to Uchiko Station (approximately 35 minutes by limited express). The historic district is a 15-minute walk from the station, or you can take the local sightseeing bus.

Ozu Castle

Ozu Castle, nicknamed the "Tobe of Iyo" after the famous hilltop castle in Bizen province, sits on a rocky crag above the Hiji River in Ozu City. Reconstructed in 2004 using traditional wooden techniques and materials, it is a rare example of a modern castle built entirely with authentic Edo-period craftsmanship. Surrounding cherry trees in bloom, with the winding Hiji River below, create a scenery often compared to a scene from a woodblock print.

The Garyu Sanso, an exquisite feudal-era villa visible from the castle across the river, adds another layer of architectural beauty to the scene. In spring, the combination of the castle on its crag, the blossoms, the river, and the villa below is as romantically picturesque as anywhere in Japan.

Cherry blossoms at Ozu Castle are typically at their peak in late March to early April. Early morning, when mist rises from the river below, is the most atmospheric time.
