Dinosaur Museum and Tojinbo โ€” Fukui's Natural Wonders and Dramatic Coastline

Dinosaur Museum and Tojinbo โ€” Fukui's Natural Wonders

Fukui Prefecture combines two of Japan's most spectacular natural attractions in a single day trip that spans geological time: the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, built above a Cretaceous-era excavation site where new dinosaur species unique to Japan are still being discovered, and Tojinbo, where millions of years of volcanic activity have created cliff formations of geometric beauty directly above the churning Japan Sea.

Highlights

The Dinosaur Museum at Katsuyama is routinely cited as one of the world's three finest paleontological institutions. Its 44 mounted skeletons include multiple species discovered exclusively in Fukui โ€” Fukuiraptor, Fukuisaurus, Fukuivenator โ€” giving the collection a distinctiveness unmatched by institutions displaying only previously known species. The active excavation site adjacent to the museum makes fossil discovery tangible rather than merely historical.

The drive from Katsuyama to Tojinbo crosses the Fukui Plain and reaches the Japan Sea coast at one of its most dramatic points. The two-kilometer cliff walk above the columnar jointed andesite formations offers perspectives on geological process across an entirely different timescale from the museum's Cretaceous focus โ€” here the shaping forces are the waves and frost of perhaps ten thousand years of Japan Sea winters. The contrast between the ordered geometry of the columns and the chaotic white violence of the sea below is perpetually arresting.

Between the two sites, Awara Onsen offers a restorative hot spring soak and a base for seafood dining featuring Echizen crab in winter months.

Getting There & Tips

A rental car is the most efficient way to combine both sites in a single day. Fukui Station is the logical base, with Awara Onsen accessible by Echizen Railway.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round for the museum. Winter for dramatic Tojinbo wave scenes and Echizen crab season (November to March).
