Sumiyoshi Shrine — The Ancient Shrine of the Three Sumiyoshi Deities in Shimonoseki

Standing in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Sumiyoshi Shrine is known as one of Japan's three great Sumiyoshi shrines, alongside those in Osaka and Hakata (Fukuoka). It enshrines the three Sumiyoshi deities and is a shrine of high standing. Revered as a guardian of sea voyages, it continues to draw deep faith from those in the fishing and maritime industries across Japan. It is also known as the Ichinomiya, the first-ranked shrine, of the old province of Nagato.

Entering the grounds, the first things to catch the eye are the stone torii and the trees lining the approach. The main hall is said to have been built in 1370 by Ouchi Hiroyo. In a rare form known as kukensha-nagare-zukuri, it consists of five connected sanctuaries and is designated a National Treasure. The worship hall is said to have been donated in 1539 by Mori Motonari and is designated a national Important Cultural Property. The shrine forest that surrounds the grounds is designated a natural monument, lending the solemn atmosphere unique to an ancient shrine. A great camphor tree in the precinct stands out as a sacred tree.

In spring the trees along the approach bud, and the grounds are wrapped in soft green. For the New Year, many worshippers visit from within and beyond Shimonoseki, creating a lively scene. On December 15, a solemn grand festival is held.
