Hikoshima Hachimangu Shrine

Standing on Hikoshima island in Shimonoseki City, Hikoshima Hachimangu is an old shrine founded in the late Heian period by Kono Michitsugu, who developed the island. Long revered as the guardian shrine of all of Hikoshima and as a deity of safe childbirth, it holds within its precinct a petroglyph stone that locals cherish as a rock that grants wishes made quietly, making it a hidden power spot known to those in the know.

Highlights

- The petroglyph stone said to grant wishes made quietly - A historic main hall dedicating Emperor Chuai, Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Nintoku - The autumn Sai-nobori ritual, designated an intangible folk cultural property by the city

Enjoying the Seasons

In spring the greenery of the precinct buds and a peaceful visit can be enjoyed. Summer brings the pleasant sea breeze unique to Hikoshima surrounded by water, and in autumn the traditional Sai-nobori ritual lets you sense the energy of the community. Winter is ideal for slowly making a wish in the quiet precinct.

Access and Basic Information

- Location: 5-12-9 Hikoshima Sako-machi, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture - About 15 minutes by car from JR Shimonoseki Station - The amulet office is generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Phone: 083-266-0700

A Quick Tip

When wishing at the petroglyph stone, the custom is to wish quietly in your heart, just as its name suggests. Hikoshima has other small shrines scattered about as well, so a Hikoshima shrine tour collecting seals is also recommended.
